But my more cynical side wonders if his staffers/finance guys actually _encouraged_ him to say something racist, because the ensuing “liberal” displeasure would permit him to fundraise more effectively. He’s got a campaign to pay for, after all! ---

For a few years now there have been embarrassing incidents in which Grassley is clearly being puppeteered by his aides—video of him repeating what they whisper in his ear in committee meetings, etc. I guess the Iowa GOP just doesn’t have anyone else with his degree of name-recognition to run in his place.
