Dang! You mean Ted just blew this idea out of his ass and didn’t research it thoroughly first?? 😲

Okay, let’s close all of the Texas ports. Every single one.

I don’t know if this is the right thread . . . this is to file under “Republican constituents are, by in large, nonsensical, delusional, and don’t even understand the meaning of most of the words that come out of their mouths.”

I heard [this story about the Virginia governor’s race](https://www.npr.org/2021/10/22/1048492648/virginia-governor-hopeful-glenn-youngkins-delicate-dance-with-the-gop-may-be-wor) yesterday, and the following bit stood out to me:

> [@](#):
>
> PAVIOUR: Youngkin moves breezily through the crowd at a rally on Tuesday in northern Virginia. Many people here, like Annette Sudbeck, harbor doubts about the last election, which experts said was free and fair. But Sudbeck gives other reasons for supporting Youngkin.
>
> ANNETTE SUDBECK: It’s those conservative values - right? - freedom of speech, our right to vote, free enterprise.

To hear anyone claim with a straight face that freedom of speech is a “conservative value” that is somehow upheld by conservative politicians is moronic, though I understand how the rhetoric can easily lean someone that way. But to claim that the right to vote is a conservative value (ie, not a liberal value)? I mean . . . I cannot think of a single thing a conservative politician has done or said in the last 5 years that even comes close to standing up for the rights of all Americans to vote, and in fact they have explicitly done the opposite, up to and including blocking debate on a voting rights bill. They care so much about voting rights that they refuse to allow it to be talked about.

Apparently the new right wing chant is “Let’s go, Brandon.” Brandon refers to NASCAR racer Brandon Brown. When he won his first race a couple of weeks ago, the reporter interviewing him said that it sounded like the crowd was chanting :“Let’s go, Brandon” (even though nobody really chanted that). And somehow, it’s become a right wing chant because it has the same number of syllables as “Fuck Joe Biden”. Congressman Bill Posey said it on the floor of the House the other day.

because “Freedom!” means not having to pay for anything or abide by any rules.

Curiously, the software is called “Mastodon” – a name unusually fitting to today’s R Party.

That’s because you are parsing it wrong.

They are standing up for the _right_ Americans to vote.

Indeed.

Interesting comments about J. D. Vance being a dick (on Twitter) about the death of the cinematographer at the New Mexico movie set:

> [@](#):
>
> … For the last several months, Vance has been locked in battle with Republican rival Josh Mandel in which both have seemingly competed to write the most outrageous statements on Twitter.
>
> Mandel on Thursday significantly upped the ante when he channeled militia rhetoric and urged his followers to “keep the freezer stocked and firearms at the ready,” while also writing of Democrats that “we will outlast these monsters and we will thrive for generations to come after God brings them down.”
>
> Mandel then encouraged his followers to invest in Bitcoin. …

Apparently there’s an actual “race to the bottom” to attract the interest of deplorable voters, who demand ever-increasing levels of cruelty, viciousness, and indecency in their preferred candidates.

I’m assuming Boston (of which Cambridge is effectively a part) is also already one.

And honestly, anyone swimming from Mexico to North Hero, VT ought to get automatic citizenship and an immediate spot on the US Olympic Squad.

I mean, we’ve been seeing that since the OP of the original SRIotD thread, where the Republicans were angry at Michelle Obama on the grounds that “School lunch is yucky!”

I think the legal theory behind this argument is, “Now that we have a 6-3 majority in the Supreme court the constitution says whatever we say it does.”

I actually don’t think it will work, while its conceivable that Obergefell might be reversed, there is (I hope) no way that they would go so far as to say that the 14th amendment doesn’t apply to the states. But as far as Texas is concerned they won’t know how far the supreme court is willing to let them get away with unless they push the boundaries to the limit.
