Yeah, that’s really stupid. After all the falderall about that movie I decided to watch the trailer and see what the big deal was all about. First of all, from all the criticism, I thought it was some sort of documentary about the sexualization of children. Turn’s out it’s a feature, in French, about tween girls dancing their troubles away. Who gives a shit? Seems to me anyone looking to this film to find child pornography is looking a little too hard for child pornography. ---

These young girls are trying to figure out where their own sexuality fits in. It’s a fascinating and troubling look, and the camera is unflinching. And it makes the audience members confront their own notions of how we view women by seeing these behaviors in girls. Some of the scenes, taken out of context, border on graphic, and could be seen as titillating. ---

Back when I was a baby prosecutor (decades ago), I had the … joyous … job of meeting with the public on Friday’s after court call. Anyone from the public could make an appointment (or walk in and wait) to talk with a prosecutor about charges they wanted to bring. There were more than a few neighbor .v neighbor bickerings and stores wanting me to do the collection on bad checks that they accepted. But on occasion, we’d get something original. One Friday I got to meet members of the Woman’s council of one of the local evangelical churches. Their leader (I don’t remember her name, but I’d guess it was Karen) wanted me to bring charges against the local Barnes and Noble for selling child pornography/obscenity. The book? Our Bodies Ourselves. ---
