Iowa Republicans have let their stranglehold on state government completely go to their heads. Free rein to pass whatever the hell they feel like is pretty dangerous, as it turns out. Already in the first weeks of the session we’ve had bills proposed to: - live-stream every school classroom in the state, so parents can carefully watch to make sure their little patriots aren’t indoctrinated by CRT or some kind of pro-gay agenda teaching (at least that bill has already died) - force schools to put all their curriculum/library books online and be able to immediately respond to parents’ questions about any of those items, or else face financial repercussions. One state senator has already spoke out against teachers, saying many of them have a “sinister agenda” to go against parents’ wishes. - increase school K-12 funding by 2.5%, in a world with close to 5% inflation and after already starving school funding over the past decade. They also have a plan to divert public education funding to private schools, because “choice,” don’t ya know. - eliminate all mask and vaccine mandates - not government ones, cause they don’t exist here in freedom-lovin’ Iowa, but any by employers. Letting people spread disease around willy-nilly = “freedom” but allowing private employers to set health rules for their employees? Can’t have that, it’s fascism or socialism or something. But today brings quite the idea. There’s a bill proposed that would limit the right of Iowa landowners to sell their land to the Department of Natural Resources or any group that wants to preserve the land for conservation. The bill would force landowners to sell for less than market value while eliminating the tax advantages for such a sale. Why would free-market Republicans want to impose on the property rights of their citizens? Well, apparently, because they seem to think potential buyers also have “private property rights” over the land they wish to buy, and it’s unfaaaaiiirrrrr to make them compete with conservation groups who don’t want to destroy the land for profit.
