They could take a somewhat diplomatic way out by simply saying “I will do everything I can to ensure the Republican Party nominates a suitable candidate,” or “I may just sit that one out,” and leave it at that. I understand how steeped these people are in strict conservative dogma, but saying out loud that you will vote for a guy who sicked a mob on you, with the intention of murdering you in broad daylight, is beyond any rational explanation. ---

After it was reported at the 1/6 commission yesterday about how a Ron Johnson staffer was trying to pressure Wisconsin to send fake electors, reporters tried to corner him as he was leaving the Senate. He told them he couldn’t talk, he was on the phone. I was dashing out the door when I posted that reply, and as I was driving to town I realized I had overlooked to include the most important factor of all: Trump allows them to push their extreme fundamentalist religious views into the mainstream – where they all believe they should be for everyone. If you look at the common denominator of people like Bowers, Barr, Pence, McConnell, Mike Lee, Steve Scalise and so many more, _all_ of them cling to a fervent view of Christianity being a necessary guidepost for every American. The fact that they adhere little to the actual tenets of Christianity is no big deal to them. It’s not what you are; it’s what you say you are. ---
