Also there is the danger that the Republicans could enter a state sub-compact. Where a subset consisting of all of the red states plus the swing states with Republican legislatures decide that all their electors will go to whomever wins the popular vote in that subset which specifically excludes states like New York, California, etc.
As bad as the electoral college is, opening it up for manipulation when we have the party of “But what if we didn’t” is much worse.

That’s what I was wondering, but the story says his wife was driving. Now I wonder if they have kids they left behind? Of course, you can also make more babies (or adopt some!).
