It might not just be Abbott, I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of people that own manufacturing interests are driving up prices for political reasons. It’s a cold, heartless, cruel world populated by bastard-coated bastards, and the sooner children realize nobody gives a shit about them the quicker they’ll toughen up. SEL = communism!!1! Meanwhile, out here on the civilized coast, I’m getting a 2% bonus once I complete 6 hours of SEL training. And maybe I’ll be a better teacher because of it. ---

One of the books probably had a word problem about Billy deciding to share 15 apples with his two best friends, and as we all know, diving things up equally between people is SOCIALISM and therefore bad. ---

There was a movement (and I suppose still is) to make textbooks, even math textbooks, more socially diverse. Just about the only clear place where this showed up was in the ethnic names mentioned in word problems. Textbook review committees went through the books and made sure they did this! A word problem where Billy has to share his apples with two others would have to name the students: Billy wants to share his 15 apples with his friends Chu and Rufus… Girls’ names had to be in there somewhere too. A word problem, thus worded, I suppose is exactly what Florida forbids. Heaven forfend that a Billy should have to share his apples with a Chu or a Rufus! The above sarcastic remarks is only semi-facetious. Really, this sounds like Florida is trying to forbid some of the same stuff that other states _require_ in their textbooks. The publishers are going to have to have separate editions for every state. And children will be learning state-specific math from now on. ETA: What kind of name is Chu? Is that supposed to be Chinese? I’ve never seen or heard that particular name. Yes, it was in a college-level beginning algebra textbook I saw at a California Community College. ---

Reminds me of the [poor guy in Texas](https://www.wkyufm.org/news/2022-04-14/bardstown-restaurant-manager-gets-hate-messages-for-flying-ukrainian-flag) who replaced one of his two Texas flags with a Ukrainian flag and got hate messages for “taking down the American flag”.
