That would be fine, so long as the Republican Answer, 8, is always correct.

And two trips to Chick-Fil-A….

I don’t want to defend this guy, but based on the prices and the description in the article it sounds to me like fairly typical expenses (2 lunches, 1 dinner, conference room rental) for a two day conference for 8-10 people. I’m saving my outrage for the next one.

No, he said we have to make up for “contemporary systemic racism,” and remedying affirmative action could bump that up to a 9.

That’s just outside Asheville, a very popular tourist destination. (Their minor league baseball team is, in fact, the Tourists.)

I don’t know anything about this resort, but you can get a room there next weekend for $150 a night, which is a steal for Asheville. The Grove Park Inn, probably the schmanciest joint in town, starts at about three times that.

There are plenty of world-class restaurants in town, with appropriate prices; Papas and Beer is not one of them. Tasty, but the furthest thing from fancy. He could have taken them to the restaurant at the Sierra Nevada brewery near the resort if he wanted to treat them.

I hate to defend this choad, but this is an incredibly modest staff retreat by Asheville standards.

From _New Yorker_ article on the A.A.F.:

> [@](#):
>
> Brian Fallon, the co-founder and executive director of Demand Justice—a progressive nonprofit dark-money group that has become a target of conservative critics, because it scrutinizes the records of right-leaning judicial nominees—told me, “It sounds as if this group is reverse-engineering the process. It’s almost like they’re trying to create the story line as opposed to finding a dry fact”—and then “trying to get people to give voice to the narrative.” His group conducts opposition research, too, but he said that it was “ham-fisted and sloppy” [for the A.A.F.] to post requests for dirt on anonymous message boards or to send mass e-mails to a nominee’s colleagues. “Most opposition researchers on our side would worry about using such tactics,” he said. “Because people are so quick to play the victim, they’d worry about becoming the story.”

> [@](#):
>
> The A.A.F.’s strategy, however, has proved more damaging when deployed on nominees whose hearings receive less attention. Such people are easier to smear because charges against them are often not properly scrutinized.

> [@](#):
>
> The A.A.F. describes itself as **a champion of transparency, but it declines to reveal the sources of its funding**. 🙄 Its official mailing address is a handsome historic building a few blocks from the U.S. Capitol. But when I stopped by there recently, to ask for the group’s basic financial records—which all tax-exempt nonprofits are legally required to produce— **a woman at the lobby’s front desk said there was no such group at that address.** 🧐 Instead, the building is occupied by a different nonprofit group: the Conservative Partnership Institute, which serves as a kind of Isle of Elba for Trump loyalists in exile. It has become the employer of Trump’s former chief of staff Mark Meadows and of Trump’s former ad-hoc legal adviser Cleta Mitchell, both of whom are fighting subpoenas from the House committee investigating the [January 6, 2021, attack](https://www.newyorker.com/tag/capitol-riot/page/2) on the U.S. Capitol.

As hard as it is for non-Christians to comprehend, the Bible teaches us that God loves everyone equally, no matter what they’ve done.

That doesn’t mean Putin won’t be judged, though.

But really, as a matter of messaging, how much harder would it have been to say, “Let’s pray for Putin … to come to his senses and end this pointless war”?

Well well well. Nobody saw THIS coming, did we? Or did we? Of course we did. (Did we?)

Yesterday it was math textbooks in the Floridland. Today it’s . . .

> “It came to my attention a few weeks ago that pornographic filth has been discovered at the Llano library,” wrote Bonnie Wallace, a 54-year-old local church volunteer. “I’m not advocating for any book to be censored but to be RELOCATED to the ADULT section. … It is the only way I can think of to prohibit censorship of books I do agree with, mainly the Bible, if more radicals come to town and want to use the fact that we censored these books against us.”
>
> Wallace had attached an Excel spreadsheet of about 60 books she found objectionable, including those about transgender teens, sex education and race, including such notable works as “Between the World and Me,” by author and journalist Ta-Nehisi Coates, an exploration of the country’s history written as a letter to his adolescent son. Not long after, the county’s chief librarian sent the list to Suzette Baker, head of one of the library’s three branches.

ETA: Is it just me and my computer network connection? Or is the entire Internet acting slow and flaky yesterday and today?

My guess as to the solution to the mystery: it will turn out that some Florida Republican will make millions when his (or her) own “textbook company” gets the contract to supply all the thousands of substituted-for-rejected books, statewide. No doubt the quality of those books will be…breathtaking.

Also Republicans can use the whole brouhaha to support their claims of Protecting the Children and Parents’ Rights, etc. etc. etc. Claims which will, of course, be completely fact-free–just the way the GOP likes it.
