I was involved only in [snail mail] direct mail marketing decades ago, but I imagine the same principles have carried forward into the digital/e-mail/social media era. Undoubtedly, things have changed, and someone with more recent experience may come along to update us, but I’m relatively confident that the basic principles I’ve described still apply. ---

It doesn’t work like that. You don’t want to “own” the whole list. You only want the name of people who respond to your offer. Let’s say you rent a list of 100,000 senior citizens at a certain income level (or cat lovers, or scuba divers, or people who travel on cruise ships). The list company sends the info to your mailing house. It used to be physical mailing labels-- not sure what the method is now. Your solicitation piece goes out, or _drops_. An **excellent** return would be 2%, or 2,000 donations, acceptances of your offer, or whatever. You don’t care about the other 98,000, and you won’t waste money mailing to them again. But you **will** go back to the 2,000 over and over again, as y’all have discovered. As those people drop out, move, disappear, or die, you’ll replenish **responders** by renting more targeted lists. * * * Ninja’d by @commasense ---

You replied to their polls! Do you imagine that they look at the responses to those fake polls? And having responded even once, they now can rent you out to others. Also, you are probably in a number of demographic groups that match their targets: neighborhood, age, race, purchasing history, etc., and show up on multiple lists that they rent. ---

I dunno. If I opt into an enforceable prohibition on the selling of my information, I’m not prepared to trust that they won’t try to weasel their way out of it by distinguishing between selling and renting. ---
