He did have a stint in the military after. That plus the (R) helped. But only for so long. The Congressional seat makes more sense. The district is so gerrymandered that it cuts across our county over to the next one east to include the big suburb the next county over, a bit of Harris county (to further dilute those nasty urban Houston voters, don’t’cha’know) and south to include all of Matagorda and Wharton counties - the last two being mostly rural and solidly Republican. The margin of victory in that district has been shrinking, so they re-jiggered the gerrymander this last go around. ---
