The town of Newburn Alabama [will hold its first actual election](https://www.huffpost.com/entry/patrick-braxton-newbern-alabama-reinstated-lawsuit_n_66719708e4b0502eac647a4c) in 2025. The town council has been appointing the mayor and other members of the local government for the last six decades. In 2020, Patrick Braxton filed to run for mayor and was the only candidate, so he was elected by default – but the town council locked him out of City Hall while they continued with their tradition of appointing their own people.        Braxton filed a lawsuit and won, giving the town of 133 people proper franchise. It is not necessary to mention the part that you have already guessed, about ethnicities in Newburn. ---

They’re appointed by the mayor - who, up until now, had been a guy who inherited the job from his dad in 2008. One wouldn’t think feudalism would still be alive and well in the US in the 2020s, but here we are. ---
