1. Lots of people have step-children and foster children and god children. And a lot of step parents skip the “step” descriptor, stressing they are the parent, and the children are their children, too. Because harping on “step” or “foster” or “adopted” is felt like a distancing move, like telling the child (or the parent) you are second class. Have you never heard people talk of having four parents instead of just two? He pronounced it wrong for long enough that he convinced himself that that was the right pronunciation, and so now he changed it to try to pronounce it wrong to mock her. ---
