Irishman, Waldo, Speaking as someone who’s descendant from several slave owning families in colonial Virginia and South Carolina …. That’s in nutshell what they are whining about. See up until the last 30 years or so most Southerners in school were being told the “lost cause” version of what happened. It’s not until they got to college/university level that the more nuanced and detailed history is revealed to them. Some take it in stride, coming to terms with all that went on; while others are so committed to the idea of the “lost cause” that they double down on their beliefs. Here in the dope most of us know that history is never black or white. And that even the spectrum of grey that is history; has a habit of appearing to have different shades of grey depending on the angle you view it from. A lot of people don’t understand that part of looking back and studying history. I feel for them because they are missing out on gaining so much perspective and insight from the past. ---

What’s interesting about that is that I grew up in Arkansas, but I don’t recall the “lost cause” noble southerners myth being taught. I didn’t actually know about that until much later as an adult. I think here in the dope. However, I did run into it in the wild. A friend of mine is from Alabama, and he’s got some twisted versions of historical points at times. I finally realized it’s from that myth. I mean, I liked “The Duke’s of Hazzard” as a kid, and loved the General Lee. But I was under 10 years old. I later came to have a better understanding of why I shouldn’t want a car with that flag on the roof. But I outgrew that fascination and learned how that image and that attitude is perceived by others. Some of these people never outgrew it. Too immersed in it I guess. Mine was just a touch, not reinforced by anyone or anything. ---

I put Trump in quotes because I highly doubt that he’s doing that sort of grunt work himself. I have a Japanese “lawsuit guitar” - a Gibson Flying V clone made in the early 80s. Glad to see Trump bringing that tradition back. I also love that a guitar with “Make America Great Again” on the fretboard is manufactured in China. ---
