'Zactly. I have long said the DoD is by far the most successful socialist experiment on the planet. I said it when I was in, I said it when I got out, and I’ve said it here a bunch of times. And boy does that piss some of the less thoughtful servicemembers and veterans right _off!_ The main problem with scaling the DoD up to encompass all the citizens (besides paying for all that) is that DoD has the right to turn away applicants and to expel members. So it can pick the ones whose behavior is both productive enough to deliver work and socialist enough not to demand disproportionate rewards for their delivered work. Yet another way that countries are not like businesses. Countries have to make do with all comers. Born here? You’re on the team and can’t be fired. ---

David Brooks, Man of the People, tweeted yesterday about how a burger and fries cost him $78 at the airport. I think the phrase “David Brooks burger” to describe the combination of an unremarkable ordinary meal with an expensive abundance of likkerdrinkin needs to become a standard idiom. “He was supposed to be in court all afternoon but went out for a David Brooks burger at lunch and didn’t show up till 3:30.” ---
