It’s a thing, I saw it with the older men on a conservative skewed woodworking forum I used to be on, to tell women to go make a sandwich, basically, get in the kitchen and serve the guy saying it. There were those that thought it was the peak of humour. ---

But it’s fully as offensive as the other items cited, I agree. Regarding its origin – I’m certain that it predates the 1995 SNL skit mentioned in **Reimann** ’s cite. In the first place, that use doesn’t make any sense unless the meme was already well-established. But I know I saw a cartoon – in the _New Yorker_ , no less – in which a writer’s-blocked writer is leaning on his desk and typewriter at a beach bungalow while his girlfriend or wife stands behind him with a plate bearing a sandwich. The dialogue below the cartoon has her suggesting he write about his being unable to write and always asking his wife/girlfriend to make him sandwiches. Then says “here’s your sandwich”. – CalMeacham, who, too the best of his recollection, has never asked his wife to make him a sandwich. ---

Hahahah. That’s great. Married 26 years. I told my wife to do something exactly once (not an order). I told her to “Pack me a bag”. I was on the phone and just discovered that my mother was in the hospital - ER. It was 8pm and I had yet to get the details and I had 100 mile mountain drive ahead of me as soon as I hung up. ---

Of course, it’s a bit ironic in that you only use “sudo” in situations where you _can’t_ do something yourself, with your own level of privilege. So telling someone to make it themselves is a nonstarter; rather, sudo grants you the privilege to do something yourself, not to tell another entity (process?) to do it for you. I will stop now before I try to overexplain the setuid bit. ---

“sudo”, in the weird sometimes backwards way of nerds, is shorthand for “su”. It means “SuperUser, do:”, so it is, in its way, a compliment for him to call her the supervisor. ---

Not really, they’re two different commands. `sudo` gives you superuser privileges if you’re allowed (there’s a list of allowed users and allowed commands), to execute another command, and you have to enter **your own password**. With `su` (which means ‘substitute user’, not ‘super user’), you have to give the password for the user you’re attempting to impersonate (the default is `root`, so thinking that `su` stands for ‘super user’ is understandable). So if you have the correct permissions set up, you can run `sudo su` to become `root`, without knowing the `root` password. ---
