One side of my family is from Minnesota. My aunt has mentioned making lefse, but I don’t remember hearing about lutefisk. ---

Fermented milk is common in my culture. So I suppose fermented meat (land or sea) would be common in places where dairy is mostly absent. But good gosh does that stuff, especially fish, have an aroma that should more accurately be described as fumes. Eye-watering, nose-wrinkling, throat-closing fumes. ---

But this was definitely not potato bread; we likely would have lapped that right up. This was canned fish that had the recommendation that be opened underwater. It didn’t help. ---
