Do you really need to show proof of citizenship when registering? I don’t remember doing so but it was a long time ago.

All this talk of grandfathering existing registrants skips over the fact that about 10% of Americans move every year.

Yes, some of us here have lived in one precinct our entre long lives. And will continue to do so to the increasingly soon end of that life.

But very quickly almost everyone else will have to register in a new precinct, or a new address in the same precinct, so grandfathering will pretty much only apply to actual grandfathers (and grandmothers).

It’s probably not a coincidence that there’s a lot of overlap between “I vote republican” and “I don’t move around much or at all.”

I just looked at the Kansas online registration form. You must answer the question as to whether or not you’re a citizen, but that’s it. You also have to provide your driver’s license number or nondriver’s identification card number, which is an ID card issued by the state.

But, you know, Kansas is a ruby-red state. We have no voter fraud here, evidenced by the fact that we’ve voted for Trump 3 times and have 2 GOP Senators. We do have a woke Dem governor, but we’ll take care of that in November, I’m sure.

That’s how I remember it. There is a question about citizenship but no proof is required.

I’m pretty sure that if we checked into it, there would be some boilerplate about answering that under threat of perjury. Kind of like when you send in your tax return, and signing it means that the information is true and correct to the best of your knowledge under penalty of perjury.

Yes, but the threat of perjury sets you up to lose if you try to vote illegally and they catch you. Which we’ve seen play out a lot over the last decade since Trump made it such an issue. My point is, not many people will sign that attestation when they know they might end up in prison for it. Who, other than idiot Republicans trying to “prove” something, will risk years of prison for one vote amongst millions? The risk vs reward is completely out of proportion.

> Steve Scalise thinks you need ID to eat at Olive Garden.

The truth is a little different. If you purchase the Never-Ending Pasta Pass at Olive Garden (allowing thirteen weeks of unlimited pasta, homemade sauces, and protein toppings, plus never-ending soup or salad and breadsticks), you must present a valid photo I.D. along with the pass when you order. Obviously, this is to prevent people from sharing the pass with others. As some Democrats pointed out, voting is a Constitutional right, unlike a lunch special.

So this is a partial end around to get birthright citizenship started. Soldiers, even though citizens, not born in the USA won’t be able to vote; but they can die.

Forty years ago the only time I had access to my military record of service was when I was changing duty stations and hand-carrying it with me. It was sealed closed, mainly to keep papers from being lost and we were told, “There’s nothing in there you haven’t seen already.”

With today’s digital world it may be a file instead of paper records.
