Odd timing, though. Abusing and fucking animals is ok but furries are right out? They could use some better internal communications and messaging discipline ---

I started this post about 2 hours ago but got sidetracked before finishing it. I see now that @Kimstu gave the definitive answer while I was elsewhere. But since I got it mostly done, I’ll wrap it up & post. Here’s some inside perspective. Sadly, the meowing and barking is real. But it doesn’t signal furries. Since back around WW-II there’s been an emergency “hailing frequency” that was monitored by the authorities for any distress calls. Following 9/11 regs were changed to require planes, but especially airliners, to all listen in all the time on a secondary radio in case they were intercepted and the interceptors were trying to hail them. Fast forward ~10 years. 9/11 and interceptions are kinda passe; doesn’t happen much, if at all. Every airliner is in on this party line. Nobody is supposed to talk on it, just listen. But inevitably some bored folks, usually younger ones, decided to play around. There’s a big generational divide in cockpits now between the aging geezers of my era, half of whom are retired and the rest in the next ~5 years, and the young whippersnappers who’re all about 30. If that. For sure notions of craftsmanship, professional dedication, etc., differ across the generations. Kinda like their attitudes to wearing ties. Or sox. Anyhow, somehow meowing on the hailing frequency became a thing. 8-10 years ago it as rare. When I retired 3 years ago it happened often enough to be annoying. Like hourly or more, and more in the northeast than out west. Mostly due to more planes within radio range of each other, not necessarily less disciplined pilots. And of course, just like real dogs or roosters, once it starts, somebody else “answers” and there’s a chorus of different meows that eventually dies down. And of course if a geezer snarled their displeasure into the microphone, a chorus of 30yo voices would chastise the Boomer in both English and Catlish. I retired before barking became a thing. But it does not surprise me at all to hear it’s become one. I imagine the barkers think they’re intimidating the meowers, and the meowers think they’re sneering unconcernedly back at the barkers. And here we are. Dumb. But not nearly as dumb as Senator Turdville and his stupid allegations of furrydom. ---

I agree w you. If my FO ever did that it would be a very bad day in their career. I used to ask other captains if they’d ever had one of their FOs do it. Nope. But that’s an admittedly small sample. Is it bizjets? Solo turboprop cargo haulers? RJs? Cargo jets? I don’t know. As a general matter I had no problems w the younger folks I worked with. Lots of crusty assholes my age bitched loud and long about them. ISTM irreverence is a large part of the ethos of the younger crowd, pilots or otherwise. They work as hard, but there’s a difference in how they view tradition and authority. Which is probably good across society, but is an issue in certain high performance highly regulated jobs. Like piloting jets. ---

On some commercial flights, the passengers can listen to the cockpit radio chatter on the entertainment system. Does this include the channel on which the barking and meowing occurs? ---

I’ve never been on a plane with that feature. None of my employers ever had it in my era. And my travels on other airlines somehow missed those. I can say it’s reasonably possible. But my bet is generally “no”. ---
