New Supernova!

Alright, 4 months later - going to be out in a really dark spot tonight. Have I missed my chance to see this?

Relative to us, it’s new.

Dammit! I thought it was a new one.

D18, yeah, probably too late. Supernovae usually are visible naked-eye for a few weeks.

My apologies for getting your hopes up! I debated starting a new thread just for that reason. Anyway, thank you for your answer and I won’t spend a lot of time looking for it.

No worries. Cloudy here anyways!

You know, I can’t help but wonder if that star had any planets harboring alien lifeforms that got completely wiped out in the stellar explosion. :frowning:

IIRC, stars that get enough to go supernova aren’t long-lived enough to develop planets - they come and go in a matter of millions of years, not billions.

Isn’t there a science fiction story about a star that goes supernova, wipes out an advanced civilization, and that the main characters discover that that is the “star in the east” from the nativity story. IIRC correctly, one of the main characters was very Christian so it was a “so, like yeah” moment.

“The Star”, by Arthur C. Clarke.

Ah yes. My memory was I saw a movie or something, and I see it was adapted for Twilight Zone 2.0.
