# New thread after being closed?

What’s the proper etiquette for starting a new thread on a closed thread that **wasn’t** closed because of a [rules violation](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showpost.php?p=7696990&postcount=5)? Mainly, when a thread has gone off topic and is closed, but I want to post seriously on the topic, what should I do?
I tried searching on this, but: A. search is slow, and B. 120 seconds between searches?!?! For subscribers too?!? (Congratulations to me for my first, serious “WTF?” moment on the SDMB).

You’d probably be able to get a better reply if we knew what thread you were asking about.

Maybe he’s not asking about a specific thread, but rather he wants to know general case guidelines. In which case, the best course of action is to email the mod who closed the thread in question and ask. Come to think of it, that’s the best thing to do even if you _do_ have a specific thread in mind, dontcha think, **Frank**?

Well, here’s [one example](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=438107) where it started off frivolously and veered off into flaming. It would be nice to see a serious discussion, especially from any paleontologists who visit the boards who could contribute on the development of new theories in the last 13 years since that column was first published.

In these circumstances I would mosey over to General Questions, refer to the column and the thread just mentioned, and state that you never really got a good answer and it’s General Questions and so here you are.
And seriously ask your question. Frame it in such a way that it stays in GQ and doesn’t get shifted to somewhere else. See if that doesn’t do it for you.
