I came in to Top Gear at the same point. My issue was that the existing trio felt forced as is. Their humor had already become old and tired. A new crew can work, or it might fail. But I’m willing to give it a shot.
So it’s going to be Chris Evans after all. Anyone see his skit with Clarkson last week where they discussed tips for the job? Apparently Hammond and May definitely not involved.
I think that to do it right, they’re going to have to change the format quite a bit. Top Gear has gotten pretty repetitive and the three have gotten a bit long in the tooth and don’t seem quite as willing to pull some of the stunts that they used to.
I certainly hope that they come back with something good, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the outcome is that they simply drive it in that it was a good time to retire anyways.
To succeed, I think that they’ll need to broaden their scope and not just do cars. They’ll also need to focus more on verbal humor and smaller pranks rather than explosions, hacking their way through the jungle, and car crashes.
I also read that Clarkson recorded voiceovers for the previously produced segments for the unaired last two episodes. They will be combined into one final episode with the original three, scheduled to air 28 June.
