Poor Army guys. The new outfit looks like it was thrown together from the other services’ leftovers. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has more dignified-looking uniforms. Screw the Army, kids: join the NOAA and fight acts of God!
Also (John Wayne notwithstanding), it has to be said that the beret is a rather twee military accessory.
For shame! The NOAA is the seventh US federal uniformed service! As the name implies, they defend the country from all manner of threats of the sea and sky, including hurricanes, pollution, and the Creature from the Black Lagoon. Were it not for the eternal vigilance of the NOAA, the nation would long ago have been overrun by walking catfish and Cthulhu monsters. Agents of the NOAA, we salute you!
We may look like bus drivers, but never confuse us with people too stupid to do better than 30 on the ASVAB, aka the Army.
Still, it could be worse. The new ABUs look like warmed-over hell. Thank God I wear a bag for a living, I might have to wear the ABU one or two times in the next 25 years, tops.
Look, in the end, I just really hope all these uniforms are really comfortable, practical, and/or hard for the enemy to spot. That’s the important part, even if they do look like whale vomit.
On the other hand…maybe that’s the point. You know that old military adage/law that the side with the snazziest looking uniforms loses? Maybe we’re just taking a preemptive approach…
Actually, the Army did get rid of the BDUs, a year or two ago. Now they all wear ACUs, which are the digi-print combat pajamas that look really comfortable but are in every way the opposite of the Air Force’s starched and pressed BDUs (I don’t know WHY we starch and press our BDUs, we’re told it looks professional, yet we never wear the blue uniform that is designed to look professional…)
But yeah, right now, the only services who still wear BDUs at all are Air Force and Navy, and both are transitioning into new uniforms. Air Force is switching to the ABUs, which basically look like better-fitting BDUs with more pockets and an urban tigerstripe camo pattern (Yes. Tigerstripes. Yes, my Army friends teased me about it. No, I don’t own a set yet.) What bugs me about the ABUs is that we can’t wear any unit insignia at all on them. Just name tapes, rank insignia and specialty badge.
But yeah, that blue uniform in the picture looks horrible. The guy looks like someone who got kicked out of the Air Force for not being able to dress themselves. First the Army gives berets to everyone, now this?
Well, for what it’s worth, most people in the Army do score better than ‘30’ on their ASVABs. The minimum score to get into the Army is actually 31, although they offer waivers down to 26.
And, some people in the Air Force scored less than 30 on their ASVABs, too. The minimum score for the Air Force is 36, but they offer a very tiny number of waivers down to 21.
The Marine Corps minimum is 32, with a few waivers down to 25. The Navy’s minimum is 35, and the Coast Guard’s is 36, although both will offer waivers for lower if they especially want the individual in question.
I know this because my husband’s nephew recently took the ASVAB in an effort to get into the Army. He scored a 20, bless his dumb little heart.
And the Air Force uniform does look like a bus driver’s.
