> Windows users like to repeat ad nauseum the “less common platform” argument, but most simply don’t understand that the way Mac OS X functions is fundamentally different from the way Windows functions.

Fortunately, \*I \*\*\*do \*\*understand that they’re different. I have a minor in computer science; one of my classes was Operating Systems, where I actually–guess what–\*wrote \*an OS with a partner. I understand the differences between Windows and Macs, especially since OS X when they went Unix-based.

Macs may have gotten a leg up on security by starting from BSD, but they are by no means inherently perfectly secure. The more market share they pick up, the more profitable it will be to create malware for them. I don’t know if you appreciate how truly small the percentage of Mac computers is–[only 6.22%](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usage_share_of_operating_systems) use OS X as of August 2010. And most organizations who buy computers in bulk run Windows–how often do you visit an office or a university where they used mostly Macs instead of PCs?

> [@](#):
>
> Another link quotes a university IT specialist, who erroneously states that Mac OS X is based on Linux

What he said was “[Mac OSX] was based on the Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD) distribution of Linux.” Linux and BSD were both developed from Unix. It’s possible that he simply misspoke, or it’s possible that the writer wrote down Linux instead of Unix. It’s not a massive error.

And anyway, the point was that the idea that there are no Mac viruses in the wild is inaccurate, as proven by the screenshot [here](http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/askjack/2010/feb/03/apple-data-computer-security), which you conveniently seem to have overlooked. I am not saying that Macs are not generally much safer than PCs–simply that they are not 100% safe, and that it’s probably a bad idea to encourage people to take security lightly just because they use a Mac, regardless of your own informed preferences.

> [@](#):
>
> Keliraeda, my belf pally, got her Frost total high enough to buy the iLvl 264 cloak (Might of the Ocean Serpent, or whatever it’s called),

Oooooh, that’s a nice cloak–congratulations!

> [@Quasimodem](#):
>
> Do y’all think we’re using our crossbow TOO much? When there’s 10 of some monsters to kill, we always draw them to us using the bow. Anything better/else we could be doing?

The main reason to use your ranged weapon is to pull a monster to you when running up to it would be bad–like when there are other ones nearby that you don’t want to fight. Using it every time can slow you down, especially if you could otherwise open with Charge, which (a) gets you there fast and (b) gives you Rage to start with.

That said, there’s nothing inherently wrong with ranged-pulling everything you want to kill.

> [@](#):
>
> They aren’t selling at auctions, and I am pricing them ONLY as “auctioneer” tells me - not higher.

What you want to do, **Quasi** , is to put the leather in the box to post it, then click the button that updates your data on what’s posted. Then, instead of just using the recommended price, you can undercut what’s actually posted right that minute.

You can also advertise in trade chat, asking people to make an offer.

> [@Nava](#):
>
> Yes and no. I realize Quasi isn’t likely to be doing a lot of heroics, but with a little help from his friends he might be able to complete a heroic Strat once he hits 80 - that drake is a fast mount, isn’t it?

The problem with 280% speed flight isn’t the mount–it’s the training. If you can afford the 4k-5k gold (depending on reputation) for that, the couple hundred extra for the mount won’t matter.

The main point for \*\*Quasi \*\*to take away is that some levels of riding training are optional. You need to take 60% ground, 100% ground, and 150% air in that order, but then after that 280% air and Northrend air are separate skills that don’t require anything other than 150% air. You can have 280% flying but not Northrend flying, or you can have Northrend flying but not 280%, or you can have both, or neither.

Me and da **Wolk’** and **Silka** would _like_ to do some heroics. Where do we sign up?

**SFG** , are you talking about the “Victory Charge”? I have that in my action bar, but never use it because it says you have to be 10 feet away (or something like that?) before it is effective?

Also, got the advice about the leather and wilco! 🙂

**Silka’s** a drake? I thought she was a gryphon?

And, in WoW, there’s MORE than a 100%??? 🙂

Just kidding, y’all.

The fact we made 77 is like a brand new sunrise to this ol’ retard and from here on out, it’s all gonna be POSITIVE, no matter how few points the percentage is.

Thanks

Quasi, Heroics are basically harder versions of the regular 5-man dungeons. You can’t do them until level 80 anyway, so you don’t have to worry about them right now. They were mentioned because in one of the heroic dungeons, if you complete it fast enough, you can win a flying drake mount.

And a good title to have it is. 😃

They’re something you can only start doing after you hit level 80–they’re “upgraded” versions of the regular Wrath dungeons that have been made harder and drop better loot, designed for max-level characters.

> [@](#):
>
> **SFG** , are you talking about the “Victory Charge”? I have that in my action bar, but never use it because it says you have to be 10 feet away (or something like that?) before it is effective?

I think you’re confusing Charge and Victory Rush.

1.) Charge is an ability that you can usually only use out of combat, though it can be used in-combat with the Arms talent Juggernaut or the Protection talent Warbringer. You have to use it from range, and it makes you rush up to an enemy and hit them. It stuns them for a second and generates Rage.

2.) Victory Rush is an ability that is only activated after you get a killing blow on an enemy. For a few seconds after the kill, it will light up with an attack that you can use on something else.

> [@](#):
>
> **Silka’s** a drake? I thought she was a gryphon?

Nope, she’s a gryphon. There are just 280% flying speed drakes in Wrath.

> [@](#):
>
> And, in WoW, there’s MORE than a 100%??? 🙂
>
> Just kidding, y’all.

😃 Those are speed _bonuses_. So a 100% land mount takes you 100% faster than walking speed. The fastest mounts in the game currently are flyers that can go 310% speed in the air. Those are all pretty hard to get, though. They’re (a) rewards for the top-ranked players at the end of each Arena season, which is a type of max-level PvP; (b) rewards from the meta achievements for Naxx (no longer obtainable), Ulduar, and Icecrown Citadel raids, which means doing a lot of hardmodes and other extra things for the bosses beyond just killing them; and (c) the reward from the meta-achievement for doing all of the other holiday meta-achievements.

I think there might also be (d) the mounts that drop in 25-man off of Yogg-Saron when you kill him with no guardians at all (Mimiron’s Head) and the Lich King when you kill him on Hardmode (Invincible), but I’m not 100% sure those scale all the way up to 310.

> [@](#):
>
> The fact we made 77 is like a brand new sunrise to this ol’ retard and from here on out, it’s all gonna be POSITIVE, no matter how few points the percentage is.

Damn straight! Keep on truckin’–I just know you’ll make it to 80. 😃

Invincible and Mimiron’s Head are both 310% speed mounts. I believe Ashes of Al’ar is as well, but I’m not positive about that last one.

I’ve been riding a Quel’Dorei Steed at the Argent Tournament and I heart it and I can’t wait to get Exalted with Stormwind so I can have a pony! Ponies!

What’s the difference or status between Night Elves and High Elves? I know Blood Elves are split off because of their desire for magic, but they still look like High Elves. Where did the Night Elves branch off, or did they develop in an entirely different way? Tyrande is a Night Elf, so Illidan was one too, right? And Illidan considers Blood Elves to be younger, but what about High Elves?

My spelling/terminology may be a little bit off 'cause I can’t check WoWWiki.

Everything started with the Night Elves (Kaldorei). Some of them started using a bunch of magic–these were the Highbourne. They still mostly looked like regular Nelves. After everything went to hell (i.e., the Sundering), the remaining Highbourne who wanted to keep using magic were kicked out completely from the rest of Night Elf society, most of them moving to the Eastern continent and evolving into the High Elves (Quel’Dorei). After Arthas destroyed the Sunwell, killing a lot of the High Elves in the process, the surviving magic-addicted High Elves turned to fel energies to sate their needs and took the name Sin’Dorei, or Blood Elves, in honor of all of those who were killed.

Also, there is evidence that the Night Elves actually evolved from…[Trolls](http://www.wowwiki.com/Troll_and_elven_lineage). This has never been proven, though.

I’ll also add that there’re a few enclaves of High Elves left who presumably never turned to fel energies – there’s a small lodge of High Elves in the Arathi Highlands.

Last night I ran VOA25 on a wild hair, and got the Sanc legs. Woo hoo! Now I just have to keep running it to get the Sanc hands.

I’m just hoping we can down the LK before the next patch hits and everything goes topsyturvy, though. Our ret pally is going out of town (gah!) next for a month (double gah!). So we essentially have to down him this weekend or find a pug replacement for him, which will mean the pally won’t have the title until much later. ☹

Our guild is gonna be taking a break from raiding when Cat hits, what with everyone needing to relearn their class. \>.

As \*\*mlees \*\*notes, this is the Hinterlands, not Arathi. Something else that’s worth noting is that these High Elves are still Alliance-friendly and Horde-hostile. It’s only Kael’thas’s people, who allied with the Naga, whom the Alliance spurned.

I just didn’t specifically mention that one. I actually used a link in that article to find and download the ClamAV antivirus software.

Short version:

The Night Elves came first. After they established their civilization around the Well of Eternity, some night elves began dabbling in arcane magic. One thing led to another, the Well and the heavy use of arcane magic attracted the attention of the Burning Legion. Demons invaded, war happened, Well of Eternity went boom, big continent of Kalimdor was sundered, creating the continents that exist today. Illidan created a new Well, and the first World Tree was planted.

Use of arcane magic was banned, but the high-class night elves (called the Highborne) didn’t want to go for that and went back to using arcane magic. They were kicked out of night elf society as a result. They packed up and moved across the sea, eventually ending up in what is now called the Eastern Kingdoms. Over time, their distance from the World Tree and the energies of the new Well resulted in these “High Elves” shrinking is stature, changing skin color, and losing their resistance to the elements. They eventually took on the appearance they have today.

Time went by and eventually the high elves built a great civilization in Quel’Thalas, now known as Eversong Woods and Ghostlands. Silvermoon City was the capital of Quel’Thalas.

When Arthas and the Scourge invaded Quel’Thalas, around 90% of the high elves perished. The survivors adopted the name “Sin’dorei”, or “Blood Elves”.

Yeah, Kael’thas just can’t catch a break. He tried to play the gentleman and got outplayed by Arthas and lost the girl, he tried to lead his people to the magic they crave and got outplayed by Arthas and lost the [del]guy[/del] his master…
