My wife’s family has a tradition of filling a bowl of water just before midnight that stays over the year divide. She didn’t do it this year - and then our daughter called just after midnight and said that she had done it.
My family doesn’t have any - we’re sane.
I tried that “first footing” thing one year, where it’s good luck to have a tall, dark man be the first to cross your threshold in the new year. I was a tall, dark-haired man, already at a party. I stepped out to my car to fetch a bottle of fine whiskey, as per the custom, and was the first to walk in the door after midnight. I offered a “wee drap” to all who wanted some, just like in the custom. Nobody there had heard of the custom. Several took a generous draught. I don’t mind that; whiskey’s for drinkin’. But most were surprised by the custom, and they were already as drunk as they had planned to get. Slamming down another two ounces of 100 proof booze to appease the tall dark man was unexpected.
I don’t think it went over well, especially the next morning. I think I’ll keep my ancient customs to myself. :smack:
Sometimes, a knowledge of folklore makes you a pest to your neighbors.
