As noted, it is the official name; though despite growing up in Jersey I never heard it until Berman started. He did it as a retro homage/nostalgia thing for Baby Boomers (same as a lot of his shtick), and other people picked it up.
He signs official documents with Leopold, and that’s what his drivers license says. But everybody but you calls him Leo.
