Is New York, New York the only American city named like this? Is there possibly a California, California or a Florida, Florida? ---

There is an Arizona City in AZ, and Arkansas City in AR and a California City in CA. That’s as far as I went before coming to the conclusion that it’s pretty common to have an X City in the great state of X. ---

Lansing, Michigan was originally named Michigan, Michigan, but it was changed after the town fathers found the name to be a bit repetitive. ---

But no one would say Kansas, Kansas or Oklahoma, Oklahoma. And, although it is New York City, no one ever says New York City, New York. I guess it’s just one of those things. Like The Bronx. ---

Isn’t its proper name the City of New York? I realize people say just New York, or New York City. And, of course, we’ve got Texas City, Texas. ---

Yes (or something like that – the Great City of the Grand Poobah of the Seal of New York or whatever). But envelopes get addressed “New York, NY.” With the other examples here, whilst I’m sure the mail would get delivered if it said “Arizona, AZ” (for example), I don’t think that’s how most people would label the letter. I think the OP is asking are there any other examples that work like “New York, NY”? ---

Well, New York County is Manhattan, and the only addresses with New York, New York are those in Manhattan proper, not the entire city. Mail to the Bronx gets sent to Bronx, NY (the county of the Bronx), and Staten Island (although it’s Richmond county IIRC) works that way also. Mail to Queens gets sent to a neighborhood, e.g. Flushing. I don’t know how Brooklyn works. Perhaps that has something to do with it, although I know it’s not consistent. ---

I think I’ve got one: Canada, Canada Although I think the city is pronounced so as to rhyme with “Armada”. It’s probably even more common outside of the US. Mexico City Panama City ---

Oklahoma City was just called Oklahoma for a few years after it was founded. And for some reason, no one’s mentioned Quebec, Quebec If you want to consider obscure places, there’s a place in Wyoming named Wyoming. It can be found in [GNIS](http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnis/web_query.gnis_web_query_form). Among those with the word City in the name, there’s Oregon City, Oregon; Iowa City, Iowa; and Illinois City, Illinois. I have to add Québec, the capital city of the province of Québec. Although it’s common (in English) to refer to it as “Québec City”, this is not the official name. ---
