New Yorkers: Walking vs. Bus vs. Subway vs. Cab

A little different for me, since I live in the 6th burrough (Hudson County, NJ) and therefore take the Port Authority Transit to Hell in and back from Manhattan…

Walking: Unless it’s raining, more than three miles, I’m in a big rush, or I have to cross a river - almost always.

Bus: Since they built the elevator from Union City down to Hoboken (see below), there is no reason for me to ever take the bus.

Subway (MTA): Almost never. I already payed three bucks to get to Manhattan, and it’s gonna cost me at least that much to get back. So I’m not gonna shell out even more unless there’s no way I can possibly walk.

Subway (PATH): Daily. There are two ways I can get into the city - take the PATH from Hoboken, or take an express bus. The bus is just awful, and since they opened the elevator to Hoboken (I’m getting to it, I promise) I can avoid it.

Hudson-Bergen Light Rail: Daily. I live on a cliff overlooking the light rail. For the first few months I lived there, the light rail would go by a hundred feet below me, inaccessible without climbing gear. But then they opened an elevator that takes me down the cliff to the light rail. The light rail then takes me to the Hoboken PATH station.

Cab (NYC): Almost never, unless I’m really in a hurry and the subways are f__ked up (which happens far less frequently now that I take the PATH).

Cab (Hoboken): Occasionally. The light rail stops running at midnight, and sometimes I get home at 1am. Which means I take the cab from the Hoboken station back to my place.

Broomstick: Would be my transit method of choice, as I can actually see where I work from where I live. Unfortunately, there’s this annoying river thingy in between.

Mostly subway. Nothing beats the subway for speed and convenience. Once I get to where I’m going I walk until I’m going to go home, but depending on time and weather I’ll take the subway short distances.

I rarely the bus every once in awhile due to said unreliability. I’ve only taken the crosstown in the middle of the day or late at night when there’s much less traffic, and occasionally in the Bronx when I can’t get there by subway.

I can’t remember the last time I took a cab.

Are you certain it was tobacco odors?

I’ll join the ‘walk’ brigade. On the sidewalks, you meet a better class of people (the mayor rides the subway every day you know).
