I’m a newbie. I need some help trying to figure out how this works. Like what boards to go to for what. Smily faces. Things like that.

Smilies: Usually top or bottom of the page. Just look for a link.

What boards do what: Just go to the main SDMB page, and it’ll give a description.

Your best is to go over to IMHO forum and start answering any question you know the answer to.  
Post ten times in an hour, and you won’t be a newbie any more.
