I was surprised to recently read the [Best Friend](http://www.chick.com/reading/tracts/0033/0033_01.asp) tract. Surprised, because I was mostly unoffended afterwards. I’m not saying the tract would have converted me to Christianity, but if I were already a Christian, this tract wouldn’t have made me want to renounce my faith. Where was the narrow-mindedness, the bigotry, the ignorance, and the hatred we’ve come to expect from a Chick tract? ---

Those are some baby dykes if ever I saw any. Did you see the way they were snuggling in the second panel on page 20? That’s surely a look of, shall we say, sweet relief in the next panel (and the other girl is unseen. I wonder where she is, hmmmm.) Then they walk away from the field of flowers holding hands. Finally the first, obviously the butch\* one from the haircut, nibbles on the femme’s ear and they embrace again with little love hearts all around. This is porn. \*Not stone-cold butch, though as we saw earlier. ---

Well, I can tell you that our friend Chick has managed to distribute his tracts all the way to Greece. I found one on my windshield when leaving work last year. It was the “Big Daddy” tract, in Greek. The translation was quite good actually. Better than I would have expected for something like this. It was obvious some effort went into making and distributing these things. It was my first contact with Chick and I have to admit it left me rather, hm, perplexed. The funny thing is that through the SDMB I discovered his site, and when I checked the original version of the tract, I noticed that some of the panels had been changed. It was when the kid “proved” that evolution was fake. Some panels had been dropped while a few had been changed. I have no idea why actually. I haven’t found any other tracts on my car since then. I now get them from the SDMB. 🙂 ---

Yeah, the Best Friend one is perplexingly unhateful. Pretty much a very simplistic explanation of Christianity from the fundamentalist Protestant viewpoint. Where is the good ol’ foaming-mouthed ranter we know and love? 😕 The little sidestory going on with the cat is even amusing! ---

What were the puritans belief system? Were they so radically different from the Church of England that they were persecuted? ---

IIRC, their beliefs included beheading the King.[1] It’d kinda make me want to kick them out. [1] Included primarily for humorous effect. I come from a weird Quaker/UCC[2]/Episcopalian/Baptist[3] background. [2] United Church of Christ, nee The Congregationalist Church, nee the Puritans. [3] Southern Baptist until the convention kicked the church out for doing horrible things like ordaining women.
