Until about the tenth century, papal names were just Latinized versions of the Popes name, so they were basically just a reflection of the fact that the Bishops of Rome were Italian or Greek. After that, the tradition of taking the name of a previous pope started, but the pool of names by that point was already dominated by Greco-Latin. I think John is the only Pope name with a Semetic origin. ---
