I haven’t watched most of the debates, and I should probably have kept it that way. This was the most scary and depressing one since the first one, which ended with a question to all the candidates about whether they’d been speaking with God lately, and what God was telling them. Apparently, all of them had been, and were getting good advice from the Creator of the Universe. This one was arguably worse. These, briefly, are my take-aways from it: - No Muslims!!! - There are evil people in this country who actually think gun control is a good idea. Some of them even openly admit it, believe it or not. - The Bill of Rights is sorted in order of importance. That’s why the Second Amendment is right up there at the top. It’s even more important now than it was when it was written and sorted, because Muslims. - There are evil people in this country who actually think the US should become more like the rest of the world. Some of them even openly admit it, believe it or not. - Donald Trump has New York values, according to Ted Cruz. Cruz explains that this isn’t an insult, merely a factual observation that The Donald is a money-grubbing deceitful and immoral asshole. Also a poopyhead. - Ted Cruz is disqualified from being president, according to Donald Trump. Also, he is a super-duper-poopyhead. - Bomb all the furriners! (Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio, in two-part harmony.) - No Muslims!!! I don’t think this misses the mark all that much. I wonder what the debate would have been like if they had actually been trying for puerile immaturity and direct appeal to all 6-year-olds? ---

All I can say is, holy fucking shit. As I understand it, that show isn’t even what Fox News passes off as a straight news show. And just think, this was supposedly Dubya’s _smarter_ brother. And the Serious candidate in this year’s field. If you go to the original link of the clip, he was being interviewed on Fox and Friends and he was obviously joking (there was a laugh right afterwards). A few of Bill Maher’s tweets during the debate: Christie: “If I’m president, Hillary won’t get within ten miles of the White House”-- great, more bridge closures. Man, for a Canadian, Cruz fights nasty, like a…well, like an American! Christie: “I vetoed a ban on guns that can shoot down airplanes and through the doors of squad cars.” Applause. Where’s ISIS when u need 'em? Oh Jeb, does Fla. really get to weigh in on guns? The one with the law “If you make me nervous, I get to shoot you?” So we’re not the world’s policeman, but we’ll bomb and torture anyone anywhere for any reason? Should THEY be calling a policeman? BTW, I came across that while surfing to see how [the petition](https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/ask-president-obama-appear-hbos-real-time-bill-maher) was going. Turns out, it’s going great! Almost 120,000 signatures right at the moment, many of which happened today because Friday night and earlier in the weekend apparently the influx of signers crashed the website. Can’t wait for the White House response! ---

Whaddaya mean did I see the show? I’m a Bill Maher groupie and devoted fanboy – I was coming out of a painful 8-week Maher-deprivation withdrawal when he was off during the holidays! 😃 Yeah, he had more to add during the monolog – like about Chris Christie “burnishing his asshole credentials” – “it’s so comforting that the party of impotent white rage is also the party of concealed carry and stand your ground … Chris Christie defended the right to own a 50 caliber rifle which can shoot through armor, in case robbers break into your house in a tank”. I’m willing to cut him lots of slack for promoting the petition. It had already occurred to me that it was truly odd that one of the most informed and informative discussion shows on television was pretty much the only one on which the ubiquitous Obama had never been a guest. I’m pretty sure he’s been on several of the late-night talk shows several times. I’m genuinely interested in how the WH will respond, now that they must. If they dismiss it with a mild joke and some BS about “scheduling conflicts” I’d find it truly disappointing. The president of the US has no obligation to appear on a talk show, but having set a precedent by appearing on virtually every single one when it suited him, I think he would owe Bill a substantive explanation if he didn’t appear. And _Real Time_ has flexibility within its format to accommodate different kinds of interaction – Obama would not likely want to come on as a panelist, but he could appear as the guest for a one-on-one interview at the beginning, or as a special guest in the middle of the show to exchange a few quips with Maher and the panelists. ETA – the last time I saw Obama appear on anybody’s show – quite recently – it was the silly Seinfeld webcast “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee”! In which Seinfeld asked him vitally important questions like what kind of underwear he wears, and who sets out his suit in the morning!
