Oh yeah…I think Jordan’s Hound predates Martin’s Hound so it’ll be Martin paying Jordan in this case.
Another bitch checking in.
I went poking around the Jordan section of Tor’s site the other night. It says there only that they’re planning on releasing the next book “sometime in 2005,” though I don’t know how old that statement is. Amazon is notorious for making up release dates to get people to preorder stuff - they’ve had fake release dates for the next Martin book for at least three years now. It also appears from poking around that site that Jordan will be writing two more prequels, a la “New Spring,” though I couldn’t figure out if he’s planning on doing them before or after the next real book.
He’s written himself into a corner and has no idea how to get out, is my theory.
I don’t know where I found this cite, and I haven’t the time to look it up again, but I read that he’s planning to release Book 11, then a prequel, book 12, another prequel, book 13, and so on. Thus making us wait even longer for the series’ conclusion. I think he said something about it ending at book 15 or so, though. I can’t recall that much.
I gave up on the WOT after four books. I thank God for this every night. And I’m an atheist.
It took until book 9 for me. I don’t remember the title anymore . . . I’ll probably check the rest out of the library when the series comes to an end. Otherwise . . . meh.
Im with you Excalibre…took me 9 books to call it quits. I feel really bad for getting all my geek friends to start reading these books to. If I had known what I was getting them into
I may or may not get the next book. The sad part is I could tell you almost word for word every plot, twist, etc…that happened in the first 6 books. I doubt I could tell you what happened in the last 5…
Smeghead, the last I heard is that book 11 is due on October 11 of this year. New Spring will also be released as a graphic novel sometime soon. There are two more prequels planned–as far as I know, one of them is about Tigraine, and one is about Tam, but I don’t have any sort of cite for that, it may be wishful wotmania.com thinking and my fevered brain has morphed it into fact.
Either way, I’ll read it all. sigh I even stood in the Barnes & Noble for half an hour to read the new prologue for EotW (for those who haven’t, don’t bother–it’s about 10 years before the main action, some festival in Emond’s Field, largely illustrating nothing but the fact that Our Heroes were once children)–but at least I didn’t buy it.
You know, I’ve read the last 10 or so and the prequel…and reading that preview gives me absolutely no urge to read the new book. I think I’ll just wait until it comes out and find a spoiler thread to get the Cliff’s Notes version. I can’t believe how many hours of my life I’ve wasted with this series when I could have been doing something more productive with my time like hammering my nuts flat with a rock.
Sad thing was, I really liked the first 6 or so. I think I might even have liked the 7th a bit. But, god, book 10 was so bad I threw it across the room in frustration when I got to the end. 11 looks just as bad, if not worse.
The prequel was all right. It didn’t make me angry, at least.
That’s okay. I’m fairly confident that Jordan forgot about it as well.

I’ve been a pretty big fan since the series first released…so yeah, I’ll be waiting in hopeful anticipation for the coming of the new book. I don’t know…its hard to say from the preview how good/bad it will be…but it definitely sounds like at least SOME of the plot threads will move along in this next book. I also heard (don’t remember where) that there will only be 3 more books…so one would figure that he’s going to have to show some movement soon.
As for the series, I agree there was some fall off from the first 4 book, but I don’t think the story really dragged as much as some folks make it out too. It has advanced…just not as fast as I or anyone else appearently wants it to. For myself, what I did in the last year was by the unabridge books on tape version of the entire series…and I listened to it while driving to my various jobs throughout my state (I drive a LOT)…and listening to the series really gave me more perspective on where he’s going, and it didn’t seem quite such a drag.
I figure…if I could finish the Dark Tower series (which I also started reading when the first book was published) I can finish this one. 3 more books? Say 10 more years (yikes!)? Yeah…I’m good for that much at least before the bod starts giving out.
-XT
I swear, with all the time I’ve invested in this series, if my body starts to give out before I’ve finished the last one, I’m going to upload my consciousness onto the Internet just to have a place to wait him out.
I live in fear that I’ll die before Jordan, Martin and Rowling are finished.
While two of those are fair, how is this not just a cheap shot at Rowling?
She’s about to release, what, book 6 of 7? Doesn’t sound like she’s dragging o me.
-Joe
Yes … but I could be hit by a bus tomorrow. Two weeks ago, I would have included George Lucas in that list.
I stopped reading after Path of Daggers (book 8?), in which Egwene finally decides to teleport to Tar Valon. Are you telling me she’s still camped outside the city?
I’m more afraid Jordan will keel over than I will…he doesn’t look all that healthy to me. Of course, if good old King could push on and finish the Dark Tower there is still hope…I never thought the old boy would finish it.
As for Martin and Rowling (and Gabaldon, Hobb, Flint, Ringo, Webber, etc etc etc)…well, thats a good reason to keep eating those veggies boys and girls!! sets down his cigar and glass of single malt scotch and shudderingly takes a bite of that broccoli
I think when I hit the big 60 though I’m going to have to cut back on the series and just finish up the 2 dozen or so I’m currently on (Jordan will probably still be on the list of ‘to finish’ series I’m following at that point :smack: )…its too stressful waiting for these folks to get a move on.
-XT
Not…exactly. I’m not sure how to do the spoiler thing so I’ll just come right out and say it…if you don’t want to hear, dont’ read on:
Basically the army is camped outside of tar Valon still…they know about the gateways but Egwene doesn’t want to destroy the tower, she wants them to toss out Elida instead. She has a dream that the Seanchan are coming to destroy the tower, so she wants it whole to fight them and also to fight at the last battle…but no one believes her. At the end of the last book though Egwene is captured by the sisters inside the tower and taken inside. We must await her fate in the next book (in theory).
-XT
It’s actually unclear as to exactly who captured Egwene … but that’s not important right now. Somebody inside the Tower has her, though it’s unknown if it’s the Blacks, the Black Hunters, Elaida’s faction, the returned rebels … it could be lots o’ people.
What bugs me the most is the fact that the entire time Egwene and the Salidar Tower have been camped outside Tar Valon, Gawyn has been five miles away from her.
But I’d best not get started on the things that annoy me. :)
If only we could combine Piers Anthony with Robert Jordan. Piers Anthony’s books started sucking a long time ago but then Jordan’s are beginning to now as well so no worries there. At least Anthony was one seriously prolific writer.
Let’s get some Star Trek geeks in here and figure a way to get those two on a transporter and arrange for a freak transporter accident that combines them.
Ok, ok…dumb idea maybe but you figure out something better!
My money is on Jordan milking this cash cow for all it is worth but why oh WHY is he writing prequels BEFORE the bloody series in done? Man…it’s not as if he couldn’t sell those too once he’s actually finished the series (or maybe not if he keeps pissing his fans off like this).
Also, Mat’s sister Bode was captured with her. She would be a pretty good hostage too.
My new method with Jordan is to decide I’ve totally given up on him and then go nuts and read a bunch at a time and then rush off to the library to get whatever’s new that I haven’t read (last time, I had gone so long that I hadn’t read the two most recent books!). Also, if you borrow it from the library, you’re less likely to throw it against the wall.
