Speaking of technical difficulties, for a good 15 to 20 minutes during the Bengals @ Jets game the audio feed went out in the booth, so the guys back at the CBS studio (Boomer Esiason et al) ‘called’ the game. Despite most of them having experience doing color commentary, they did not do well. Particularly James Brown, who didn’t even try to do play-by-play. ---

In the “it took you long enough” department: The NFL has finally decided to kill the Pro Bowl game, after years of tinkering with it, attempting to make it interesting to fans – attempts which were doomed to failure, because of the inherent nature of players not wanting to risk injury playing a high-contact sport as an exhibition. In addition to the other “skills” competitions which have been featured during “Pro Bowl Week” in recent years, the actual game is being replaced by a flag football game. This ESPN article indicates that a company run by Peyton Manning will be working with the league on the week’s programming and events. Due to flexing, sometimes there will be make up games so AFC games will show on Fox and NFC on CBS, but it’s not exactly common. I’m also surprised at the idea that Cincinnati and Indy games would both be available on local affiliates. That’s not supposed to happen. Here in the Houston area, they generally air both Houston and Dallas games at the same time, but they’re in different conferences. It is possible, however, that if there’s a cross-conference game (Indy playing at an NFC team, for example), that both games would be aired in the same market at the same time. The FOX affiliate would have to make a request for it with the league office, which can be hit or miss. ---

Typically every year I’ll watch that, and then ignore the actual “game”. Kind of like in baseball, I enjoy the Hone Run Derby. The actual game, not so much. At least it’s real baseball though. If it wasn’t for the stupid flag football I would have called this a perfect decision by the NFL. So now instead of a watered-down game derisively called flag football, we get actual flag football. 🙄 ---

Patriots are off to the mediocre start I anticipated, but now Mac Jones is out for an unknown period of time with a high ankle sprain. That leaves the Pats with assistant coach Brian Hoyer at QB, backed up by rookie Bailey Zappe. (Yes, that is a real person). At 1-2 already and facing Green Bay with that powerhouse duo, and in a division where the Bills and Dolphins are surging, the Pats can kiss the playoffs - and the season - goodbye. I like the idea of the Mannings telecast but I wish they’d stop trying to bring in celebrity guests and making it a talk show. FFS when that happens they barely pay attention to the game. I just want savvy former players giving me actual insight into the game. What a squandered idea. ---
