According to Jim Irsay, the Washington Commanders may have [violated the NFL’s anti-tampering rule](https://www.indystar.com/story/sports/nfl/colts/2023/05/07/colts-jim-irsay-any-contact-with-andrew-luck-violated-nfl-rules/70193488007/) by contacting retired QB Andrew Luck during the 2022 season.
The story goes that Washington was calling around to see if they could trade for a QB, and they also called Luck.
But when Luck retired, he was still under contract with Indianapolis for an additional 3 years. As such, the Colts retained the exclusive rights to Luck.
The story is ongoing.

OTOH, how hard is it to research a guy’s contract status _before_ you call him directly and risk a tampering violation?
Or did they just think no one would find out?

I hate defending the Snyder organization, but actually in this case it’s appearing that Jim Irsay is just being a nitwit here. This is entirely based on one sentence an ESPN Commanders writer wrote based on something he wrote in an earlier article, based on ???
Luck’s “camp” has stated that no one from Washington ever contacted any of them. The writer lists no source at all for this information, not even an ambiguous “according to sources,” he just plops it into the middle of a sentence like it’s known fact. Literally the only references to this originate from Keim. I’m pretty sure the source is his own ass.

The story appears to be a warped version of what likely happened - Washington in March of 2022 did a bit of brainstorming for QB, including Luck potentially, but nothing more came of that than internal brainstorming.
Now a year later, they’re still considering their QB options (I mean, c’mon, does anybody think any of Sam Howell, Jake Fromm, or Jacoby Brissett are going to be their QB of the future?) and that has somehow morphed into “OMG, Dan Snyder is tampering with a retired player still under contract!!1!!”

ESPN has a lengthy article today, about the messy divorce between the Packers and Aaron Rodgers.
In the weeks leading up to the trade, when Rodgers complained that he hadn’t heard from the Packers after the end of the 2022 season (thus making him “feel unwanted”), Green Bay GM Brian Gutekunst indicated that the Packers had reached out to Rodgers numerous times, and never heard back from him.
