An as-yet-unnamed member of the Indianapolis Colts is under investigation by the league for violating the NFL’s policies on gambling; according to reports, his “pervasive” betting included wagering on his own team’s games.

With sports leagues cozying up to gambling for the money, it is no real surprise. I think it is only going to become more common in the future.

Totally agreed. The NFL (and the other major sports leagues) are just chasing the money, which seems to be their primary goal in life, but I also fear that it’s just a matter of time before we get a real gambling-related scandal (i.e., players or coaches trying to fix a game).
The NFL has, as far as I can tell, only two real rules for the players around sports gambling now:
- Don’t bet on NFL games
- Don’t engage in any sports gambling activities (i.e., placing a bet on your sports betting app) while on team property
Pretty simple, and yet, a non-zero number of players can’t follow them.

Meanwhile, the ghosts of Paul Hornung and Alex Karras (both of whom were suspended for the 1963 for gambling on NFL games) will be saying, “what the hell?”

They also have guys walking around selling beer, but I wouldn’t expect players to show up drunk to a game.

No, because the NFL prohibits alcohol in the locker rooms as well.
So the double standard applies to both booze and gambling.

Actually, [there are three of them](https://www.nfl.com/news/nfl-announces-tri-exclusive-sports-betting-partners), apparently; Caesar’s, FanDuel, and DraftKings.
What’s the easiest way to find an “official NFL Sportsbook”?
Wait until the Super Bowl; they’re the only ones advertising Super Bowl events, as opposed to “Watch The Big Game\* (or The Pro Football Championship) Here” events.
\*the actual Big Game will be on November 18 at Stanford, but that’s another story

Here’s what Goodell had to say last year. As to what’s being sprayed in the locker room following a championship, I have no idea.

I guess I don’t see the double standard. They are saying employees can drink and gamble as much as they want, just not on company property (and no gambling on the NFL).
That they allow customers to drink and gamble at the stadium IMO is an entirely separate thing.

I don’t see them as separate. The NFL wants ban vices from their employees while they are working, but the league is happy to take the money from those vices when the fans are involved.
Personally, I don’t care if Travis Kelce drinks a beer in the locker room or Russell Wilson puts a bet on the Nuggets while he’s getting treatment in the trainer’s room.

For me, the fact that the NFL (and most, if not all, of the other major leagues) is now in bed, financially speaking, with the gambling industry makes it, as an organization, just a bit hypocritical. The league had, traditionally, considered an overt connection to gambling to be anathema, at least in part because they wanted to avoid even the hint of a suspicion that games might be fixed. (The fact that sports gambling was also, until recently, illegal in most places, and often associated with organized crime, was undoubtedly a large part of it, too.)

I have YouTubeTV and just signed up for the NFL package.
It’ll be interesting. I am really looking forward to being able to just pick the game I want to watch easily.

I assume this is just some writing filling a quota for words on the page during the slowest part of the off season.
I really can’t see the Jags playing at Daytona Speedway. Makes far more sense to have them play in Orlando, which has the hotel rooms and other big city stuff.
It would be interesting, if the renovations take 2 years to do one game at the University of Florida one year and one game at Florida State for the second year.
Can’t see spending all the menu to turn a race track into a temporary football stadium
