My son the sports nerd sent it to me. He got it from a BlueSky account that he follows. I then went to pro-football-reference to find the box score.

Before I heard it from my son, I would have had no clue that a record such as that existed.

JJ McCarthy has been traded to NY Giants for 5th round pick. He’s not good but still has a winning record in the NFL. Interesting to see what happens now he’s with the other Harbaugh coach. Baker Mayfield, who wasn’t exactly having a banner season, dislocated his thumb on his final pass attempt yesterday. (It was an interception). Mayfield is expected to miss 3 weeks. Free Agent rookie Jaylon Daniels will be starting next week for the winless Bucs against the Pack. Daniels, who played at Kansas, was impressive in the preseason but was 0-3 in desperation mode yesterday, including an interception on a Hail Mary to end the game.

Trevor Lawrence took a knee on the one yard line rather than score a touchdown. That’s sometimes a viable strategy at the end of a game for clock mangement purposes. But Lawrence did it with _9 minutes_ left in the game.

The Packers, for whom the offensive line was already a liability before losing Zach Bako-Bewele to a knee injury on Thursday night, have signed two veteran offensive linemen, both of whom were former first-round draft choices: guard Laken Tomlinson, who played with the Texans last year, and tackle-guard Mekhi Becton, who played for the Chargers last season.

Both are older (Tomlinson is 34, Becton is 27), and neither played particularly well last season (which is undoubtedly why they were available), but it’s clear that the Packers have already reached desperation mode on the offensive line.

Heck, yesterday even Matt Stafford ended the game with a (sort of) Hail Mary into the end zone which was intercepted, and I heard he’s kind of good.

I sympathize. Seattle is only missing one offensive lineman and that was enough to turn it from a strength into a weakness yesterday,

Lateral from the actual receiver on a “hook and lateral” play. The yards gained by the player who takes the lateral count as receiving yards for that player, but only the actual receiver gets a reception.

See, in my mind I’ve always thought that should count the same as a QB who throws a pass, and they should be passing yards. But I’m not an NFL stat-keeper person.

My favorite play is still the one where Doug Baldwin was in the backfield for the Seahawks, Russell Wilson took the snap, tossed it back to Doug, and then Doug threw it to Russell for a touchdown pass.

Receiving yards and passing yards for a team during a game match; if a “normal” pass play goes for 15 yards, the quarterback gets credited with 15 passing yards, and the receiver gets credited with 15 receiving yards.

On the play in question, the quarterback would have gotten passing yard credit for the entire length of the play. The receiving yards are divided up between the receiver (who gets credit for the yards between the line of scrimmage on the play, and the yardline where he lateraled the ball) and the recipient of the lateral (who gets credit for the remaining yards on the play).

Interesting.

I guess technically for the Seahawk anecdote, Russell would have been credited for a TD pass to himself.

Here’s the play if anyone is interested (short video less than a minute):

No, because Wilson ‘tossed it back’ to Baldwin. That’s a lateral, which is considered a handoff, not a pass.

You’re right; I was thinking of the opposite play, which starts with a lateral then a pass, but a hook and lateral starts with a pass but the player gives a lateral to another player.

The “hook” is because the receiver turns back toward the line of scrimmage (so his route is literally shaped like a hook) and then tosses it back to another person that the defense isn’t paying attention to; and often the defense gets literally turned around in the confusion.

I suspect that it’s clear to you know, but on that sort of play, the quarterback gets no yardage credit on the play; only the non-QB who throws the pass receives credit for passing yardage.

A lateral pass _looks_ like a forward pass (because the passer throws the ball through the air), but as @Railer13 notes, a lateral pass is, as far as statistics go, essentially a very long handoff.
