NFL 2026-2027: Week 6

The Falcons showed up in Q4 and made things mildly interesting for a few minutes.

Good to see Caleb is 100 percent recovered.

The biggest drama for the Commies is, have they learned to tell time over the past week?

Cardinals win!!! And ruin many survival pools.

LoL Rams.

The vaunted NFC West, at this point, is the 49ers and three posers.

In the SDMB survivor pool there were actually 6 picks for the Colts and only 3 for the Rams (and 2 picks for winning teams).

Other than week 4 there has been absolute carnage this year. In a 3 life pool, 5 were eliminated in week 5 and 5 more this week (including me), leaving only 7 survivors.

Titans got their first win, much to the chagrin of those of us who picked the Colts.

The remaining winless team is the Chargers, who lost to the Chiefs.

Chiefs are now 5-0, as are the Vikings who are on their bye week. Niners are also 5-0 and play the Commanders tomorrow night at home.

Don’t forget Miami, who was on a bye this week, thus preserving their defeated streak another week

Dammit, of course. I obviously can no longer read the standings.

My method of coping with how bad the Chargers are now is to take the position that it retroactively proves the Herbert defenders were right  . This is what it looks like when Herbert is actually bad, and it’s a complete catastrophe. Just goes to prove how great he must have been playing last year, to drag this ridiculous team to 11 wins.

Its sometimes said that nfl officials could call a penalty on every play. In the Dallas/ Green Bay game it might actually happen.

Giants game was quite the roller coaster. Terrible loss to the Saints, but it looks like the JJ McCarthy era has officially started. He showed some promise, after an almost immediate pick, by scoring 17 of the 24 points needed. Even got one pass attempt in the red zone for the game tying touchdown, but incomplete.

Giants had/have a super soft schedule this year. I would consider this season a resounding success if they sneak into the playoffs with a wild card and get a single playoff win. Keep hope alive!

The 4-2 AFC North leading Browns… aren’t actually very good. Every time I watch them win it’s like everything has to go right and they scrape by a team that’s either not very good or in the case of the Ravens has a critical injury. They can’t put together one good game, they just seem like they get their opponents to play down to their level and then pull out one good drive to pull out the win. I guess “Opponents playing down to your level” could be an effect of a pretty good defense.

I mean, they’re winning, so, hey, cool. And there’s a general sense that it’s good when a team manages to win the close ones, like they’ve got some sort of winning spirit and make it happen. But the Browns feel like they’re faking being winners and would have the doors blown off by a good team. But their next 4 opponents are the Titans, Steelers, Saints, Texans, so maybe they can keep scrounging up ugly wins for a few of those. Really, there’s no one too scary on their schedule, maybe they can keep barely beating bad teams all year.

They might go all year without scoring 24 points, just keeping games at 17-17 in the 4th quarter and then pulling one good drive out of their ass.

Sure, they’re probably going to get exposed eventually. But they weren’t as awful as some projected them be even if they aren’t as good as their current win-loss indicates. Houston is kind of in the opposite bucket. They stand at 2-4 but are probably better than what you’d expect from a 4 loss team.

We’re in the that middle part of the season when there are a few clearly good teams at the top, a few clearly bad teams at the bottom, and a muddled mess of 2 to 4 win teams. And, as always, injuries making it difficult to figure things out. It’ll be another 4-6 weeks before the wheat starts separating from the chaff.

Ultimately, it always comes down to what Bill Parcells used to say, right? You are what your record says you are.

They have 4 wins and 2 losses, despite being outscored 122-106. They got thumped by the Jags in their first game, but the other four games, including their other loss, have been one-score games.

Jalen Hurts has now been ruled out for the rest of the season, after doctors found multiple blood clots in his lungs; treatment will take at least three months.

Hurts played the game in England on no sleep because sleeping was “a risk.” Playing an NFL football game? Apparently not a risk.

If there was any remaining doubt about the extent to which the NFL values its players’ long-term health, well, there you go.

It’s not unlike the tobacco companies. As long as the majority of players make it to old age in something resembling good health, anyway.

I guess “to be fair”, this was a decision Hurts made that the Eagles did not oppose. But at the same time, the league hasn’t done anything to the team about it, either. Plausible deniability all around but we should be better than that.

But in other news, Indy just fired now former GM Chris Ballard after that rather embarrassing loss to previously winless Tennessee. I’m not sure about the timing on this one. They played KC close and could have been 3-3 or even 4-2 if things fell a bit different.

If he was going to be fired at the first sign of trouble, it might have been better to just do it after last season and given a new GM a better starting point to work with. As it is, the trade deadline is coming up on the 10th, so that’s got to be a consideration.

The Rams were widely felt to be Super Bowl favorites in the preseason. They’re now 2-4, and facing even bad injury news:

  • WR Davante Adams has a bad hamstring injury (ruptured semitendinosus), and is expected to miss 6 to 10 weeks.
  • NT Poona Ford will be out for the rest of the season with a torn triceps.
  • K Blake Grupe will be out for the season with a torn ACL.
  • DT Kobie Turner will be out several weeks with a groin injury, and will likely be going onto IR.
  • DE Myles Garrett will not return to practice this week, as he continues to recover from a knee injury and surgery.

I had a triple bypass which involved taking a vein from a leg to bypass the blocked arteries. I would up with deep vein thrombosis that sent a clot to my right lung. (Bizarrely, I had a totally unrelated collapse of my left lung.)

The clot alone makes for a dangerous condition. Clots in both lungs can be life-threatening all by themselves. It sounds like they caught them early enough to avoid that. Great news. Near-death with two broke lungs is not something I would wish on anyone.
