NFL Week 1

Great day for the Bears. Cincy looks like a very good team, they were pretty sharp on both sides of the ball and particularly had the Bears defense on it’s heels a bit. Of course the Bears forced them into some costly physical and mental mistakes which is par for the course, and the Bears capitalized.

When the power rankings come out on Monday I think it will be:

  1. 49ers
  2. Broncos
  3. Saints
  4. Bears
  5. Seahawks

Few quick takeaways. Brandon Marshall and AJ Green are both amazing. The Bears finally have a Tight End, now if he could only stay on-sides. The Bears O Line was as good as advertised, many people think the Bengals D Line is the best in the league and we kept Cutler pretty clean with no sacks. We also were able to run enough to salt away the clock and convert some short yardage situations. Jeffery looks to have taken a step forward. The Bears pass rush was a bit uninspiring against a solid Bengals line and some great playcalling from Gruden. Tillman is god damn amazing, Jennings chipped in with a forced fumble and recovery of his own. It’s not luck folks. The Bengals LBs are world class headcases and could be the downfall of this team. The Bengals are going to win the AFC North going away, they may clinch in November. The Packers lost, and the Niners didn’t exactly look like a well oiled machine. Yay, first place Bears.

Bears at number four? You must be joking.

It was a cheap gnats hit that broke Romo’s collar bone when they sledded over him a coupla years back. Now kiwanuka if that how you spell it sees him throw, then lowers his head and goes for the ribs. So the gnats are coached and play dirty. Fine, I’m no Romo fan but if I’m a Dallas coach I respond in kind and have my D hit Eli so fucking hard he doesn’t even slobber any more.

Eta: Dallas touchdown? Okay, that’s a start.

We’ll see. The Bengals were 9. The Ravens, Packers and Falcons lost. Seattle and New England barely squeaked by a couple cellar dwellers. The Colts and Giants were/are a hell of along ways from impressive. I forgot about the Texans/Redskins game tomorrow, the winner of that game could be above the Bears if they are relatively sharp so I’d say top 5 is a solid argument.

Power rankings mean next to nothing I realize, but beating the Bengals will look good on the resume on a day when a bunch of incumbents looked like shit.

Can we add another digit to that Giants spread - please?

Like a middle digit?

Glad to see they got the real refs in time for that dead ball offsetting penalties in the Packers/49ers game. Like I said last year being a long time Seahawks fan, very little difference between professional refs and replacement refs.

It’s nice to see so much love for my team.

Yikes. Giants were snakebit tonight. Six turnovers. Still Cruz put up monster numbers, and pulled out a dire fantasy situation for me.

The Bears were REALLY lucky to win that game. I admit the Bears o-line did a great job snuffing the Bengals d-line rush for most of the game, but let’s be real here.

The 58 yard FG for Gould was a gift at the end of the first half…the Bengals stupidly threw it on second down deep in their territory after BJGE got stuffed for a loss on first down (not sure why we ran the ball there), didn’t run out the clock and then shanked a punt AND had a bullshit personal foul called on them after that. Your guy was blocking Kirkpatrick in the back well into out of bounds on the return, and he shoved the dude out of bounds in retaliation and drew a stupid flag. So that’s three points for what should have been offsetting penalties right there.

The game hinged on the Sanu fumble though. Jesus. We had the ball TWICE in FG range in the second half and laughably made critical mistakes and we STILL had a chance with a minute left if Maualuga didn’t pick up a personal foul after your guy kept him from getting up and he (once gain) retaliated. Should have ONCE AGAIN been offsetting penalties. Total bullshit.

The one thing that chaps my ass is Marvin Lewis and his management of timeouts. That sequence where the Bengals called two timeouts on two consecutive plays due to improper amounts of men on the field was just horrible.

Good game Bears, enjoy the gift. You aren’t as good as you think you are.

The Bears forced a 3 and out in the Bengals last possession with 8 to go and then held the ball for the last 6:30 of the game, mostly running against that D Line, but it was the call against Maualuga that cost you the chance to tie?

Also you have some serious revisionist history going on with your description of events.

The Bengals only had 4 2nd half possessions, a 80 yard TD drive following the kickoff, a 3 and out where they punted from their own 29, a 3 plays and a fumble by Sanu on the Bears 19 and then the last 3 and out. Not sure where you’re getting twice in FG range unless you are suggesting giving the opening TD back.

And on that last personal foul.

Rey got driven out of the play, he got pissed about being embarrassed and did that.

It was all luck, that ball must have had some snot on it, that’s why Sanu fumbled. The Bears have been the “luckiest” team in the league for quite a while now.

Dirty to go for a QB’s ribs? If you don’t lower your head you’ll get penalized for a blow to the head, and if you go too low you get flagged for going for the knees. The league has specifically legislated that you pretty much have to go for the ribs.

Probably. It’s the kinda thing that’s hard to know with much confidence (except for that one time that two Giants defenders fainted simultaneously). But yeah, that’s dirty pool.

Looked ok to me. I mean, I’m a Giants fan, but still. Neither hit was all that hard, it’s just that Romo got sandwiched between two rushers.

Sometimes I think you and I watch different Bears games, maybe in different universes.

The Bengals looked, and played, like the Bungles of old. They turned the ball over three times, they had next to no running game to speak of, and their offense consisted of “Throw it to that guy who is amazing”. They committed 8 penalties, including a couple complete boneheaded plays that gifted the Bears points, and had to burn through their time outs because they couldn’t get the right number of people on the field.

The Bengals were nearly the exact opposite of “sharp”. Credit to the Bears for winning the game, but let’s not pretend the Bengals played a good game.

Tillman’s first interception was damn impressive (although Dalton should have never thrown the ball). He jumped the slant, and fought Green for the ball. Not lucky at all. But the second interception bounced off Green’s hands and straight into Tillman’s. That play was at least in part, lucky. Lucky that Green dropped a ball, and lucky that the ball happened to fall into Tillman’s hands.

That’s how the NFL is, some turnovers are great plays, and some are simply taking advantage of the mistakes of the opposing team. The ones in the latter category are much more about luck.

I didn’t see anything dirty about the hit. They hit him between shoulder and knee, exactly where they’re supposed to.

What I want to know is where the fuck Dashon Goldson was supposed to hit Jeremy Kerley on that ridiculous personal foul call that cost us the game much more than the late hit on Geno Smith.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a guy dive at the knees of his fellow offensive lineman. Thanks for the chuckle David DeCastro!

You should’ve seen what the fuck Oneil Cousins was doing. He’d turn around and charge at his own QB, or try to give his running back a hug during a screen.

Seriously, he is the worst player in the NFL. When he used to be on the Ravens and I heard an injury was forcing him to start I’d laugh and masturbate all week. Then somehow he got stuck on the Browns. He was forced to start today due to all sorts of guard injuries, and as expected, an utterly putrid performance. Not only was he incapable of blocking anyone, but 3 times during big plays an offense he had them called back for a penalty. It’s seriously up there with the worst individual performances in a game ever. I have no idea how the guy is in the NFL, there’s no way a random UDFA would be worse than him.

Two games: Eagles-Redskins, Texans-Chargers.

The idea that the Redskins will be a top 5 team if they beat the Texans is even crazier.

Haven’t seen it addressed, so I’ll ask now: Why did the Pats take a knee with 30 seconds left and 3 timeouts? All I can say is they are damn lucky it didn’t come back to bite them in the ass.

A judgement call. Here Kiwanuka has seen the QB’s arm go forward and the ball release. He then lowers his head and drives into the QB leading with the crown of his helmet. I don’t see the Cowboys playing this way so if I’m a Dallas defensive coach I show this to my guys. The emphasis on protecting defenseless players is apparently out the window. This is who took out your QB for half a season. Here they’re trying to do it again. Level the playing field. Take Manning out. It doesn’t matter if he’s already thrown the ball, injure their QB.

It’s why I said that about Matthews hit on Kaepernick too, “What are you trying to do, get Rodgers killed?”
