Which is why I said watch the _tape_. After bouncing off Ruud he slid or rolled a couple of yards along the ground.

He falls as he catches the ball, lands at the 3 and bounces forward due to momentum.

I think stating that an article in the Miami Herald credited to the AP isn’t a “Florida-based paper” as I originally stated while ignoring the points made in the actual article, as well as the other two articles I linked to printed in different papers, is a straw man.

> Nah, they showed it about 15 times on ESPN. The defender laid into Vick while he was still in play and before he touched the out of bounds area. Vick also was not surrendering himself, he was sprinting for the corner. There was no secondary push, the LB threw a 2 hand shiver (no helmet or pads involved) into Vick while the play was live and that contact alone sent Vick flying.
>
> Remember both players were moving really fast towards the sideline and Vick is really light. It looked much worse than it was. See here: [NFL Football Highlights, Clips & Analysis | NFL.com](http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-game-highlights/09000d5d81cdd675/Vick-not-treated-like-other-QB-s)

After rewatching the clip I almost agree. I remembered there having been a bit more time between initial contact and push. I still think the actual pushing was verging on out of bounds and hence entirely unnecessary, and that no one would have been shocked if a flag had been thrown even if it had been a running back. Borderline case, and most every QB in the league draws a flag there so it’s not out of line for Reid to be pissed off.

Regarding the Michael Vick late hit non-call, back in his Atlanta days Antonio Pierce got a 15 yard unsportsmanlike penalty for that exact play. No part of Vick had touched out of bounds yet, it wasn’t even close, though he was almost certainly heading out of bounds.

I was particularly pissed about the penalty because earlier in that same game, Vick had headed to the sideline in the redzone but then tiptoed the sideline for a touchdown. I felt that meant Pierce was absolutely justified in pushing Vick out of bounds along the sideline later in the game, but the refs saw it differently. In the end I chalked it up to the pussification of the NFL regarding QBs.

Just posting to say that Vick used to get that call, so it’s not a pure running QB thing.

> […]
> Quite frankly, I don’t understand how this could stand.

The whistle doesn’t end a loose ball. The Browns should always jump on every loose ball every play, as every team should.

Go back and reread my cite, also with video evidence. The players stopped playing in that one, and based on the description (I didn’t watch the video) the guy who picked up the ball was just picking it up to hand it to the ref or something; he didn’t try to advance it. And he got awarded the fumble recovery.

Man, I just finally got around to watching that video of the Jets strength coach tripping that Miami defender and I’ve got to say…what a fucking tool.

If that isn’t a termination-worthy bush league thing to do, then I don’t know what is. How ridiculous and unnecessary.

I will be at that game so lets hope for that 0% chance for my Pats. I want a win when I go to a game. I’ve never had a loss when I’ve been to a Pats game. _Knock on wood_

Turns out he’s suspended without pay for the remainder of the season and fined 25K. Not sure how much a strength coach makes, but I’d imagine that’s a noticable amount of money for him.

Damn. For want of a coin toss the Texans lost a chance to put my beloved Steelers into a commanding position in the AFC North. There’s not a person out there except maybe Baltimore fans who weren’t watching the 4th quarter who doesn’t think that Houston would have won had they won the coin toss. Baltimore’s defense was dead tired, and without that rest they got with the coin toss win there is no doubt in my mind that they would have lost.

Too bad it didn’t happen that way. Oh, well.

So, let’s review my picks for grins:

Indy won. Damn. 0-1
Cleveland choked. The Bills? Come ON. 0-2
Atlanta. Obvious pick. 1-2
Detroit. Called the trap but didn’t pick it. Damn. 1-3
Jacksonville. Called it. 2-3
Giants took it to the Vikes. 2-4
Pittsburgh. I was closer with the high end guess. Amazing. 3-4
Tampa, but not easily. Still… 4-4
New Orleans in a romp. 5-4
Niners save Singletary’s job for another week. 5-5
Arizona. The Donkeys absolutely, completely suck. 5-6
New England. I’m going to demur to my 21-point pick as I’m already sucking wind. 6-6
Miami. Wow, I think they heard me. 7-6
San Diego. Norv is safe for a while longer, as is the rest of the AFC if he makes the playoffs. 8-6
Philadelphia. Dallas not doing anything right is usually OK, but I wanted this one for all the other ancillary reasons. 8-7
Baltimore almost choked it away, and as I said above, nothing would have made me happier. Alas… 8-8

Take notes, guys. This is what happens when you go with your heart and not your head. I broke even (arguably), and I can live with that, but you’ll have better luck overall making rational, well-reasoned picks. These, for the most part, were not.

That was the most pathetic offensive performance I’ve seen by a Vikings team since the Spergon Wynn era. That was like watching a preseason game. It was weird.

I didn’t get to see the game, how was the crowd? Did they lean one way or the other?

I ask because in another thread I mentioned how Minnesota might be at a disadvantage in Ford Field because they’re a division rival to the regular home team.

Not too raucous, and there were some Giants fans there for sure, but on balance I’d say they cheered for Minnesota. OTOH, there were about 10,000 no shows, and the crowd seemed to check out (both figuratively and literally) pretty early once the Vikings fell behind.

[Matt Barrows](http://blogs.sacbee.com/49ers/archives/2010/12/fox-sports-plea.html) of the Sacramento Bee says the music I heard during the Seahawks-49ers game wasn’t just in my head. And it could be coming to a broadcast near you soon.

Barrows talked to Fox Sports VP of Communications Dan Bell, who said the idea came from the same guy who came up with the constant clock/score graphic and the first down line, Fox Sports Chairman David Hill. They tried it out first with us losers\* out in the NFC West: “the intent was to give the game the same type of drama that a great musical score provides a sports movie like ‘Rocky’ or ‘We Are Marshall.’”

It seemed to me more like Madden than “Any Given Sunday,” but I can’t say I hated it. They only played music between plays, usually after scores (and the were a lot of scores for the 49ers 😃 )

\*: My own term, not Barrows’s or Bell’s
