> I can’t say it’s impossible for the Dolphins to beat the Patriots. They beat the Colts and Eagles, and neither one of those teams is awful. The Patriots have been struggling lately, only winning 3 of their last 6, and 2 of those wins were close ones against the Eagles and Cowboys. They’re not a dominant team right now, with their only crushing win in the second half of the season being their win against the Bengals yesterday (which is the worst team in the NFL this year).
>
> I don’t expect the Dolphins to win, it would be one heck of an upset. But I wouldn’t be shocked either.

I suppose anything’s possible but I’d REALLY be shocked if that were to happen (everything you typed is true but the Patriots DID _ream_ the Dolphins **43 - 0** earlier this season in a place where they usually have a tough time winning [for some reason]).

I DO expect Seattle to beat AZ next week but I’m also on “upset alert” about the Seahawks’ game next Sunday. To me it has **all** the hallmarks of a “trap game” for the 'hawks.

So, anybody else remember when the Dolphins took a physical on Drew Brees and decided he wasn’t worth taking a risk on for a 4 year contract , so they went with Dante Culpepper instead?

I like to remember that, just because it’s nice to reflect that not every dumbass GM decision was made by the Lions.

Russell Wilson went to the third round of the draft…

Richard Sherman the fifth round…

Tom Brady the sixth round…

A lot of GMs misjudge talent.

All I want for Christmas is losses by Seattle and San Francisco next week. That, combined with Green Bay winning against Minnesota and Detroit gives them the #1 seed.

They may be the worst #1 team ever, but #1 is still #1. Until we lose in spectacular fashion to the Cowboys in the divisional round, because of course we do.

Pffft. If the N.F.L. were to suspend every player who’s ever indulged in illegal substances I can assure you that the level of play within the league would immediately drop to that of something like the arena league.

That may well be; my comment was more about Gordon, in particular, since this is his sixth suspension, and he’s lost nearly three full seasons due to suspensions.

Brees had a pretty good night. 😃

He passed Peyton Manning, to become the NFL’s career leader in touchdown passes, and now has 541 passing TDs, to Manning’s 539. (Tonight, he also passed by Tom Brady, who’s currently at 538.)

And, Brees had 29 completions in 30 attempts tonight, setting the single-game completion percentage record at 96.7%.

Brees has a history of torching the Colts at the Superdome. A few years ago he beat them 62-7.

Why is it that professional, full-time, NFL coaches can’t get clock management right at all? I saw literally one minute of the game and this what it was: End of first half, Saints get first and goal at the six with 49 seconds left and two timeouts. Rather than call a time out so they can have time to run four plays, they let the clock run and now it’s second and goal with 13 seconds left, enough time for only one play then a field goal. Sure, they gave up a shot for four more points, but at least they saved their third time out! (It carries over to the second half, right? Wait, what?)

Bill Simmons used to say that NFL coaches should hire a ‘Madden’ guy just to do time management (he’d do nothing but play lots of video game football, to get lots of experience with when to call time outs, etc). I used to think it was a joke, but I wonder sometimes if some coaches shouldn’t do that.

Facebook memories reminded me that today is the 4 year anniversary of the infamous Mustard vs Ketchup game. At least it was the beginning of the end for those awful color rush uniforms.

They were up 17 points already and were trying to run the clock out of the half.

Wow I remember that game, has it been 4 years already? I guess it has been, I think that had the Rams as “mustard” when they were still in St. Louis (and the Buccaneers were “ketchup”).

Yeah what an ugly game.

There was a Bills vs Cardinals? (not sure about the opponent, only that they were in red) game that was unwatchable for a friend of mine. He’s colorblind, and the uniforms looked the same to him.

Might have been one of the first “Color Rush” games, in 2015, between the Bills and the Jets, in which the Bills were wearing all red, and the Jets all green.

If the Saints were just running out the clock, why were they throwing into the end zone, instead of kneeling or even just running up the middle?

Because the next TD pass would give Drew Brees the all time NFL touchdown record. As it was they had one but it was nullified by a penalty. They kicked a FG instead, then got the TD and the record in the 3rd quarter. But going for the record at then end of the half without giving them any points was just too blatant, so they settled for a FG.

I was going to sarcastically joke about inflating Brees’s record but huh, maybe that was the goal.

I mean, why not, with the game in hand and victory nearly assured let’s work on some other goals while we’re at it.

Teams have been even more blatant about such things in the past before. Decades ago, Walter Payton broke the all-time record for most rushing yards in a single game by gaining yardage on a play on 4th-and-goal when the Bears were leading the Vikings by a score of merely 10-7 and it was clear that Chicago ought to kick a field goal. Instead the Chicago coach, wanting to give Payton the record, insisted on running the ball.

Payton broke the record, failed to score, but the Bears doggedly clung on to their 10-7 lead to win anyway.

If you’re going to have someone break a record, and have the game stopped for a while because of it, there’s probably no better time to do it than the final play of a half.
