But I went to a Texas Stars AHL game last night, and for the first time this season I got to see the new AHL OT format played out so I thought I’d revisit this topic we discussed early in the season. I’ve seen a couple of other OT games but they ended before they got to the good stuff. What they’re doing now is playing a 7 minute OT and switching ends. They play 4 on 4 for the first 3 minutes, and at the first stoppage after 3 minutes they go to 3 on 3. It was nuts. I haven’t seen the stats on it, but it has to be cutting down the number of games that get decided by a shootout (although this game did wind up going to the shootout). Couple of observations about the 3 on 3: It’s damned near impossible to get a line change when the puck is in play - you just can’t afford the time. Faceoffs become enormously important. And the crowd energy and intensity went up about 3 notches. Yeah, the purists would probably hate it. But you know what, this game has changed a lot over the years and that’s not going to stop anytime soon. I thought it was cool as hell, and I’d love to see the NHL adopt this format. ---

The Caps won because they maintained composure after it all went to hell. ---

I heard that joke, only it was the Flyers, not the Leafs. How the hell did Ovi get away with it?
