> The NHL network has really pissed me off with their exclusivity. It’s on a special sports tier at my cable system. My building assesses a fee for cable/internet/TiVo along with all the other utilities except for electricity, so it’s not a bad deal since everyone in this large building has to pay it.
>
> However, I also pay for NHL Gamecenter live. Yesterday, there was only one game in the NHL, the Blue Jackets vs Leafs, both out of market teams for me. However, the NHL blacked out the game on Game Center live. I was quite pissed since I was home sick and didn’t want to watch all the pregame hype leading up to the Georgia/Alabama college football game. If I’m paying for Game Center live, they shouldn’t black out NHL Network games.

I feel your pain, but from the other side I dropped Gamecenter because I have both NHL Network and NBCSN. With those channels, I have access to some form of hockey whenever I want it. NHLN is usually showing live look-ins and while I don’t get the whole game, I get moved around from game to game and it is good enough for me.

More importantly, you missed a great ending to a game. As a Jackets fan, the ensuing meltdown by Leafs fans was entertaining. I was not a fan of the Torts hire but he has been everything the Jackets have needed. Coaches usually don’t hang around after a game but seeing him high fiving everyone of the players as they came off the ice is a great moment.

Sportsnet blacks out way too many Flyers games but at least they don’t do that with the Canucks, so at least I can still get in my mediocre quotient.

The team only took the name in November 2016, just over a year ago ([cite](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SrpcQfgTgIQ)) and the article tells us:

> [@](#):
>
> The new NHL expansion franchise, which started play this season, revealed its name and logos to the world in November 2016 after filing to trademark other options.
>
> The Army expressed its opposition to the mark 10 months later, in September 2017; the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office gave 30 days for anyone to oppose. The Army received an extension until Wednesday.

The bottom line is that Bill Foley is obsessed with his team having the same name (or as close as possible) to West Point’s Black Knights and he simply will not give it up and pick something else.

The IP/naming/creative part of this franchise has been an absolute shitshow from the start, and apparently will not settle down any time soon.

Awesome hockey decisions but not so good in other areas, IMO.

Maybe if Las Vegas could reconsider things and maybe take on more of a Bob Seger theme and re-name themselves the Vegas Hollywood Nights? (sorry **Bo** - I mean the _LAS_😛 Vegas Hollywood Nights.)
Great logo - a basic black and white line drawing of Bob’s face. The opening-number-as-teams-file-onto-the-ice could be either “Like a Rock” or “Her Strut”.
I know Bob is a bit of a Detroit homer, so bringing him on board could be asking the moon. (or - agaaaaaiiinst the wind?:p)

I could do without the allstar game and just watch the skills competition, which itself can get pretty camp, but at least nowhere _near_ as painful as watching that half-assed, somnambulistic not-even-a-scrimmage that they call the game. The only thing I care about the break is the voting\* and the break the players get - I’d favour a shorter season, really.

\*Even the voting, I have to admit, can have its “Girgensons/Scott anomolies”, let’s just say.

The Golden Knights is an incredibly stupid name. I know they weren’t going to have anything to do with gambling, but there are plenty of other nicknames.

I know people thought Blue Jackets was a dumb name and too similar to the Blues, but at least there’s an Ohio connection to Blue Jackets.

Maybe not the most pressing hockey item, but Bruins fans - I feel your pain.
Worry not much longer, though:

Yes, [Rene Rancourt](https://youtu.be/T8i-K2Uyiyg?t=101) will pack it in at the end of the season.
Wow hearing him holding a note always added a few years on my life.
I’m sure Bruins fans will miss his x-mas carolling with the Big Bear in one of the benches during the intermission, and flashing his jacket lining. (“oh how many fist pumps is he gonna do _this_ time?”)

Why does he always have to run back off the carpet?

It should be noted here that legendary hockey writer [Red Fisher](http://montrealgazette.com/sports/hockey/nhl/hockey-inside-out/montreal-loses-a-hockey-legend-as-red-fisher-dies-at-age-91) just passed away at age 91.

What makes him legendary you may ask? The first hockey game he covered was on March 17, 1955. The infamous ‘Richard Riot’ game. He continued to cover the Canadiens until he retired in 2012. 57 years on the beat of the same team, remarkable.

> Longtime USA Hockey executive and U.S. Olympic men’s hockey general manager Jim Johannson died unexpectedly Sunday at age 53, shocking the sport less than three weeks before the start of the Pyeongchang Games.
>
> Johannson died away in his sleep at his home in Colorado Springs, according to USA Hockey. His death came in the midst of the most high-profile role in his career: putting together the U.S. men’s Olympic hockey team without NHL players going to South Korea, a position he relished after doing so at several world junior and world championships.
>
> “He had a couple of the greatest days of his life at USA Hockey recently to be able to call all these guys that never thought in their lives they’d play on a U.S. Olympic hockey team, and he got to tell them that they realized a dream,” USA Hockey execute director Pat Kelleher said by phone. “I think that meant as much to Jimmy as it did to any of the players.”

RIP, Mr. Johannson; you done good.

IKR? A team made up of rejects from other teams is leading the league and setting all kinds of records. It’s like watching a movie that takes months and months to play out (until someone makes an actual movie and then it’ll play out in like 90 minutes, tops).

I object to Fleury being referred to as a “reject”. He was let go because they couldn’t afford him anymore with the salary cap. Trust me, nobody wanted to see him go, it just made better sense to keep Murray.
(Dude is going to get the biggest ovation when he returns to Pittsburgh next month, I guarantee)

Well, not really. He was left unprotected due to the fact every team could only protect one goalie, and Murray’s 10 years younger.

Especially if it was for more than 2 goals scored in regulation time. The CBJ offense has been struggling lately.
