NHL: The Playoffs

Aaaaaaaaand, the Flyers are asleep AGAIN! They don’t shoot the puck, Bryz sucks…

It must be the PLAYOFFS!

Next Flyers game is Sunday at 4:30 PST. I think I’ll go to a movie on Sunday at 4:30 PST.

CONGRATS to the LA Kings, though! They’ve only lost one freaking game so far! hope they kill Phoenix in the next round.

Gee, what a pity.

I forgot to apologize for calling Sir Crosby, “Cindy.”

After all, Sydney is a girl’s name too. Equal rights for all!!

And the dark horse comes through again. Kings sweep the Blues.

Are the Kings a team of density?

The Kings beating the Blues doesn’t terribly surprise me at all; St. Louis was a paper tiger. A quick four, that’s a bit of a surprise.

Los Angeles, the 8 seed, has now beaten both the #1 and #2 seeds in their conference. Since the playoffs went to an eight-team seeding format, that has never happened before.

Happy Birthday, Marty.

What is the penalty that Giroux will get for his head shot on Zubrus? I would guess it should be two games but I think that any hearing will be delayed with a hope that the Devils win the series and the hit blows over.

"Hi, I’m Brendan Shanahan of the Department of Player Slay-fty…cough Safety. After careful review, we have decided to fine Mr Giroux $2500 and give him a stern warning not to do it again or he’ll be sent to his room without dessert. In coming to this conclusion we considered the following factors:

  • Claude Giroux plays for the Philadelphia Flyers, and we are a little bit afraid of them

  • Claude Giroux is a superstar

  • No one even remembers the name of the guy he hit…well, they do, but he’s not as much as a superstar (I mean, come on, the guy plays for New Jersey and isn’t even that guy who makes a bazillion dollars or the old goalie dude!)

  • It’s the playoffs, and our decision-making skills seem to have disappeared entirely and pineapple snowshoe"

:stuck_out_tongue:

I was a huge Kings fans for a decade, half season then season ticket holder. My biggest sporting thrill live was a comeback from 3-0 down against Red Wings in the playoffs I believe the 2000-01 season. Then I got married and my hockey buddy got married and we stopped going and then I moved to a virtual hockey no-mans land and I kind of stopped following hockey so closely. But I always kept an eye on my Kings and still cheer for them, so I am so happy to see them doing well and knowing all those suffering dedicated Kings fans in Los Angeles are getting to enjoy the ride. They used to say there were only 20,000 Kings fans in Los Angeles, but they went to every game. An exaggeration, but while LA is not a hockey mecca, the Kings fans there are as great and dedicated as any anywhere.

Capitals you had it locked up. Wtf?

Are you kidding – they always choke in the playoffs? As for Giroux – snerk Sweet, sweet schaudenfreude (did I spell that right?)

I’m not sure what was the bigger fail: Ward’s inexplicable high sticking penalty, or Holtby forgetting the first rule of goaltending (stay between the puck and the net!).

Gotta hand it to the Rangers. 6 seconds from a 1 game elimination to only needing to win one of two to advance. That’s a huge turnaround. The Caps have to be questioning themselves.

The Caps aren’t dead but they have to beat Lundquist . . . twice. There lies the problem.

Folks in the DC area have a saying: "If there’s a way to lose, our team (Caps, Deadskins, Bullets (or Wizards)) will find it. Just look at the Nationals MLB team.

I’m so tired of following the Caps, only to see them tank it in the end. Especially since they’ve finally got some talent.

No, it’s schadenfreude. I’ll also quietly point out that Ovechkin marks at least the 3rd time a Ranger has been hit in the head with the offending player not even getting a hearing with Shannahan.

That indeed was a major goaltending mistake: you simply don’t leave the post when the puck goes low to the side like that-you keep your ass glued to the iron (and of course Barry Melrose on ESPN prattles on about some minor irrelevancy involving his leg while completely ignoring the primary sin). He does that and the Caps can win at home. Instead he got delusions that he was Dominic Hasek, and they lose instead.

Bye bye Flyers. The world is now a better place.

Happy to be eating crow this morning. I knew the series would be closer than many were predicting, but I was and am still surprised at how the Devils dominated the Flyers and that they never made (or were able to make) the proper adjustments.

A lot of Flyers fans are going to be blaming Bryzgalov, and while he did allow a few softies and of course had that own goal that ended up being the game and series winner, he was not the reason the Flyers lost. That most of the games were as close as they were is due almost solely to his play. In all the Devils out shot the Flyers 164-134 and finished with an amazing +58 Corsi and +44 Fenwick. That they ultimately outscored the Flyers 18-11 is a product of that and Bryzgalov is the main reason the scores weren’t even more lopsided.

A lot of Flyers fans are also going to be blaming Shanahan for suspending Giroux for an elimination game, but I think that logic overlooks his minimal impact throughout the series (0 even strength points). His absence didn’t help them, especially on the PP, but there’s little reason to believe that his presence would have changed the outcome of Game 5 in any real way. A bit ironically, Giroux’s suspension for a dirty hit opened the door for Zac Rinaldo to bring his special brand of dirtiness to the game. I’ve said it before and I’m sure I’ll say it again… that guy is a menace. He is reckless and remorseless. He will not stop until he really hurts someone and it makes me very angry that of any forward Laviolette could have used to fill in for Giroux, he chose that piece of shit.

As uncertain as I was about this round, I actually think the Devils match up pretty well against either of their potential ECF opponents.
