Under the logic of the flat tax, that’s discriminatory as well (you popped out the little rug rats, why should I subsidize them?)

This raises another fundamental problem with the income tax – either you set it up so that everybody, even the poorest, pays something significant (which is difficult to do without crossing the line between “significant” and “intolerable burden”) or you create a bread-and-circuses problem (a voting bloc with a vested interest in more tax-supported boodle and none whatsoever in fiscal responsiblity).

Many folks will argue that the state has a vested interest in people producing more citizens, and that’s why they’re subsidized. Hey, someone has to work the counter at Mickie Dees.

Once you crack the door open to that argument, there’s no stopping, and you’re right back to square one.
