My boss just found out his daughter is pregnant, so I want to harrass him by calling him various nicknames for grandfathers. Help! Grandpa Gramps Pop-pop Opa (which I guess I should have listed third?) … What are some others? ---

Papaw is a perennial favorite here in the mountains. Along with his wife Meemaw. ---

I had Grampy and Grandpere (alright, so the latter is just French for grandfather, but it helped distinguish between them). ---

My grandfather is “Boo.” Being his first grandchild, I had the honor of coming up with it (if not just because I couldn’t pronounce “Grandpa” at 1.5 years old). There’s some cute story behind it, but I’ll be damned if I can remember it. ---

When the first neicephew arrived in our family, my mother specifically insisted on being “Meemaw” to differentiate between the various other grandmas and great-grandma’s. Our Dad is called Pawpaw, Poppi, and Pahpah by the various kids. ---

I like the fact that Norwegian and Swedish have separate words for “maternal grandfather” and “paternal grandfather”, as do Chinese and Vietnamese. ---
