Night Time Feud: Not Necessarily Great Literature by Baker [Closed]

Damnit! Forgot all about Tarzan. But I figured Clan of the Cave Bear was a safe bet since Dopers tend to like it. I’m glad I went with Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.

And I agree with you, OtakuLoki–Emma Bovary’s death was nothing compared to Old Yeller’s. (Though I have to admit, I was sadder after Where the Red Fern Grows than after Old Yeller…poor Old Dan, poor Little Ann.)

  1. Foundation Trilogy
  2. Lost Horizon
  3. Tarzan of the Apes
  4. Barbara Cartland
  5. Dick Francis
  6. Hercule Poirot
  7. A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court
  8. Scarlett O’Hara
  9. Anna Karenina
  10. Black Beauty
  11. My sentimental favorite is The Magic Tunnel, but I’m going for the points here.
  12. Actually “suicide by train”, as opposed to her hand (shooting/stabbing self, taking poison), but I’m confident of at least a few matches here.

Good point. I was wondering if that counted, but then I just decided to parse “by their own hand” as general suicide rather than a more literal meaning. Plus, it does seem to be getting quite a few matches here. Also, I decided to be literal when it said novel (as opposed to play), though I suppose it doesn’t really make a difference when it comes to the matches?

I never did think of Romeo and Juliet for #9, but I’ll concede that characters from a play should be counted. And I gave the thread idea.

As to #3, no love for Mowgli I see. And I liked **El Kabong’s ** answer, that’s not one I remembered.

  1. The Deptford Trilogy by Robertson Davies
  2. The Lost World by Arthur Conan Doyle
  3. Tarzan of the Apes
  4. Barbara Cartland
  5. Dick Francis
  6. Father Brown
  7. A Connecticut Yankee In King Arthur’s Court
  8. Scarlett O’Hara
  9. Jude the Obscure
  10. Black Beauty

I don’t think it should count. It was the first thing I thought of, but I specifically rejected it as not being a novel.

There is no “wrong” answer, remember…

  1. His Dark Materials
  2. The Lost World
  3. Tarzan
  4. Barbara Cartland
  5. Dick Francis
  6. Hercule Poirot
  7. The Time Machine
  8. Scarlett O’Hara
  9. Romeo & Juliet
  10. Charlotte’s Web

There are no wrong answers, but I would argue that McWatt is not a “main” character.
