That’s why I always flooded the nests with a giant pasta pot full of boiling water. Fun for the whole family!
Shudder! I found a large ball of ants in my water butt once. I scooped it out to find they were all running around a huge queen (I suppose). I stomped on them, but I really did have a couple of nightmares about a huge ant coming to get me.

Getting that many fire ants together in one densely compact area would be an ideal opportunity to spray them all with Raid from an industrial-size sprayer.
Fire ant rafts in and of themselves aren’t nightmare fuel. Lots of kinds of ants do this.
Being caught in a flood, particularly without a boat, and having to dodge the damn things, on the other hand…
