Yes. It keeps the body’s hydration and electrolyte levels in balance. Since the body cannot store sodium like other minerals, it needs to be a part of the daily diet.

In the days before refrigeration, salt was a necessary mineral as it was used for preserving foods (particularly meat, i.e. bacon).

In our modern diet, if you eat a certain amount of processed foods (which is a possibility), then extra salt doesn’t need to be added–you’ll consume enough to get by.
