He’s corrupt he’s not stupid. Running as an independent was hedging his bets hoping he would be found not guilty. There will be no serious campaign for reelection if there is one at all. There certainly won’t be a hint of a pardon and Menendez isn’t stupid enough to think there will be.

Maybe a few would refuse but why? What would they gain? At the very least he’ll be removed from all committees. He will still vote with the party. No gain there for the right. The Republicans can point at him and say the dems have a crook but the dems can point out they actually police themselves and the republicans are the ones blocking it. There is no gain for keeping him in for the right.

I’m glad to see some action is happening, but “taking the first step in a review that could lead to his expulsion” does not give me a lot of faith that he’s going to be expelled anytime soon. And he’s not a Senator anymore come January regardless.

It has to go through the ethics committee first. There is no time constraints. They can take as little or as much time as they need. It does not sound like they will take long. If I had to guess I would say their report will be finished by the end of the week.

The Senate is on recess from Aug 5 to Sept 6 so the Governor just needs to select someone by the end of the recess. He said he’d choose a caretaker similar to what we have in CA to replace Feinstein.

Yeah, definitely can’t promote Andy Kim early now because House Democrats are already down a member with the passing of Sheila Jackson Lee.
edit: two actually – I’d forgotten about Rep. Donald Payne passing in April (the special election for his seat is scheduled for September).
