So, I guess we won’t be hearing Undercover Angel, or Imaginary Lover on your show any time soon?
heh heh heh heh …solo act…I get it… heh heh heh
what about that song by tweet… I was looking so good I couldn’t resist myself…
I can’t believe nobody posted “Dancing With Myself” by Billy Idol yet. Thought someone would beat me to it… no pun intended, of course.
F_X
Beat it by Michael Jackson? no? AWWW why not?!?!
So nothing at all by Pearl Jam then?
I had heard that Hand Jive had that as a “subtext” as you will – and back in the 50s and 60s, I believe all matters sexual were subtext. Plus, I can’t imagine what else it would be about.
Why would you be friends with someone who would throw such accusations at you?
I wish you had played it. They could do with the overseas exposure.
(But I understand that you can’t)
If that’s what it means, then:
-
How do you do the hand jive with your feet?
-
How could you get away with doing the hand jive on mid-1950’s TV?
(I assume that, by “hand jive”, we’re talking about Johnny Otis’ “Willie and the Hand Jive”)
-
Dunno. The hand jive was a dance step as well as that other thing. Metaphor, I guess.
-
Once again, it’s a dance step as well as that other thing. I much the same way that the Simpsons has gotten away wigth a NUMBER of double entendres on prime time TV. They’ve been doing this stuff a long time in the U.S. Anybody remember Bogie and Lauren Bacall’s hilarious conversation about horse racing in “To Have and Have Not”? Part of it went like this (they are pretending they are jockeys for the purposes of sliding it past the Hays Office, mind you.) Bacall: Well, I think you like to hang back at the beginning and then move up fast and easy and take the leader from behind."
“Hand Jive” was pretty much the same kind of thing.
I’m surprised nobody’s mentioned Pictures of Lily by The Who.
Songs about masturbation…now there’s a MusicSource/KTel collection if I’ve ever seen one!
“Undercover Angel” is about masturbating? SAY WHAT? SAY OOO OOO OOO WHEE! SAY ALL RIGHT! SAY LOVE ME, LOVE ME, LOVE ME.
Seconded.
I’m off to see The Waifs play live in two weeks time. Yay.
Incidentally, personally I wouldn’t consider “The Haircut” to be a inappropriate song at breakfast time. The lyric quoted is the only reference in the piece to masturbation, and it’s pretty easy for a casual listener to miss. That said, it’s your radio station, your call; and the woman referred to in the OP is totally out of line
How about “Blister in the Sun,” or “Touch Myself?” Those get played on mainstream radio all the time during work hours.
I have to say, I think the OP sounds a little prudish.
Everybody sing:
But Rosie youre all right -- you wear my ring When you hold me tight -- Rosie that
s my thing
When you turn out the light – Ive got to hand it to me Looks like it
s me and you again tonight Rosie…

Whether I’m prudish or not isn’t really the point. The point is that my reasons were totally justifiable and she was out of line with her Gender Studies 101 simplification.
We assume people will be listening from 9-5 at work, so we try to gear our shows during the day to more “work-friendly” genres - we have a soul program from one to two, folk and blues in the late morning, jazz for the ride home, and so on. The more “challenging” genres - ie. rap, metal, and so on - are on in the evening.
We also have a budget of approximately twelve cents per annum, and are still trying to establish some sort of financial stability. So the station’s general missive, especially during the day, is not to piss off any potential advertisers or sponsors. So we watch what we play extra carefully. It’s not quite the indie spirit, but I can understand.
